Title:

Prime Factorization
Grade: 7th Grade
Overall Goal:
The students will be understanding how to find the the prime factorization of whole
numbers while using computational thinking skills. By breaking down numbers into an expression
the students are learning about decomposition. We will guide the students to explore more
examples of where decomposition in seen in everyday life and other areas in school besides
math. We hope they will realize that computational thinking is seen and used in all places.
The instructor will start the lesson by presenting the prime factor rap on teachertube. This
will be a short review of what the kids have already learned. After the instructor should show the
powerpoint. In the powerpint the teacher scoffolds an example of how we are wanting th
students to set ip factor trees. The kids will instructed to shout out answers to weather the
number that is shown is prime or not. This can be an early assessment for the teacher.
Depending on how the kids do, we could either stop and explain or move on.
The students will then be presented with new information on how to do prime
factorization utilizing the whiteboards. The teacher will then further explain decomposition and
why it is important. The teacher will then go through step by step on how to do the problems. By
the end the teacher will present sample questions on the board. The kids should work these
problems out on their notebook and be ready to explain how to do it in front of the class.
Finally, the students will participate in a 10 minutes Kahoot game. Each student will be
provided with paper and pencil in order to do their work. This game will provide feedback on how
the class is doing. If they are struggling, the teacher should stop and explain the problem to the
class. After the 10 questions the students should get their notes checked by the teacher for
participation.

Key Terms & Definitions:
● Prime Number: a whole number greater than one whose only factors are one and itself
● Factor Tree: a tool that breaks down a number into its prime factors
● Factors: the numbers that multiply to create another number.
● Decomposition: Breaking down the problem into smaller, more manageable parts

Lesson Introduction (Hook, Grabber):
The teacher begin by playing the video, the prime numbers rap, for the students as a
review of prime numbers. After, the teacher will make sure that the students got a clear review of
prime numbers with the video. Then, the teacher will present a powerpoint, each slide containing
a number. When the number is presented, students will be instructed to shoutout if the number is
prime or not. Since school is mostly sit down and listen, this will allow the students to get more
engaged in the lesson and interact with the teacher and the concept. Also, when getting answers
right the kids may feel more self efficacy. If most students get the answer wrong, the teacher will
stop and explain. This should take about 5 minutes.

Lesson Main:
The teacher will utilize the white board for this lesson. First, the teacher will introduce
what prime factorization is. Then, the teacher will explain to the students how to utilize a factor
tree to find the prime factorization of a whole number. In this step, the teacher will also explain to
the students how prime factorization is the “decomposing” of a whole number. The teacher will
also lead the students to think about how you decompose situations in other areas of life as well.
Once definitions are out of the way, the teacher will dive into examples of prime factorization of
whole numbers. Within the examples, the teacher will show the students how to write the answer
using exponents. Following the direct lesson from the teacher, the teacher will put up examples
for students to work out on their own. The teacher should provide the students ample time to
complete the problems (about 3-5 minutes). Then the teacher should ask individual students to
come up to the board to write out the prime factorization using a factor tree. This allows the
students to be more engaged with the lesson. Once, all the problems have been complete the
teacher will wrap up the lesson with the lesson ending. This lesson main should take about 15
minutes. There is an example lesson plan outline in the resource section.

Lesson Ending:
The teacher will bring the lesson to a close with the Kahoot that has been created over
prime factorization . This will also serve as an assessment for the students. In the game, the
students with be asked to find the prime factorization of a whole number. They will be given 60
seconds to solve the problem using a factor tree. They will need a seperate piece of paper and
writing utensil with which they can solve the problems, this piece of paper will be turned in at the
end of class.. Then, they will have to choose one of the four answers on the Kahoot that lines up
with the answer they believe is correct. If all students have submitted their answers before the 60
seconds is up, the teacher may click to move onto the next question. If a majority of the students
get the question wrong, the teacher will take time to work through the problem on the
whiteboard to help the students understand the correct answer. The teacher should go around
and collect the paper the kids used to work problems out. This game should take about 10
minutes.

Differentiation:
ADHD modification:
Those who have ADHD have higher difficulty to pay attention in class than others. Some
accommodations us teachers can do to aid them is seat them in the area of the room, away from
a window or door. To keep the kid connected, us teachers should make frequent eye contact
with the student. When walking around we should ask them if they have any questions or
confusion. We should also look around to make sure they are taking notes and staying on task.
Students with ADHD should be provided with an outline of the class schedule. The
powerpoint could be color coded or put in bold the major takeaways of the slide for the student
to focus. We should also supply them with visual aids that are easily followed. Our short lesson
with small activities should be god for one with ADHD. We should include some break in between
the different activities. After each activity we should explain the main points.

Dyscalculia modification:
Those With Dyscalculia have a hard time memorizing and organizing. Instructions and
direction should be written out for the student so that they have more energy to actually solve
the problem. We will aid the student with a “cheat sheet” providing specific steps of how to do
prime factorization. We will also aid the student with a multiplication cheat sheet to look at so the
student has more energy to do the problem. This will also creates the student from having
misconceptions. Working more one on one with the student and working problems over and over
will also benefit the student.
Students with Dyscalculia are aware of being more trouble than other which leads to less
motivation. The Kahoot problems are set up easy to difficult by doing this the kid will feel like they
are succeeding leading to higher self efficacy to be able to solve the harder questions.

Anticipated Difficulties:
With the hooker of having the kids shout out the answer, we are hoping to overcome the
difficulty of getting the kids engaged and to pay attention. Students might have trouble
understanding prime factorization or what a prime number is, we have included time for the
students to raise hands if this occurs. For the Kahoot game, students might feel rushed to answer
the question. We have set the game for 60 seconds, which should be plenty of time. If shown
from the assessment that most students are not understanding, we will be going over the
answers so that students will hopefully get a better understanding. We also hope that having the
kids turn in their in-class work will erase the chances of them guessing on the kahoot game.
