Bavelier, Daphne, et al. “Children, wired - for better and for worse.” Neuron, U.S. National

Library of Medicine, 9 Sept. 2010, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3170902/.

This (Indent) is a web article that examines the effects, good and bad, that technology has

on children. It lists several reasons why technology can be good and why it can be bad.

Some particular examples that the author lists in the article why technology can be bad

are violence, addiction, and distraction. She describes how these can play a significant

role in how a child can be influenced from the use of technology. The author goes into

detail on how we need to incorporate the knowledge that we know about technology for

the (its) positive uses. Clearly, technology has shaped the way we learn, interact, and

develop in our everyday lives. There is so much information on both sides of the

spectrum and that is why technology can be a debated topic.

The (Indent) author of this article is Daphne Bavelier. She studies neuroscience and is a

professor at the University of Geneva. This source is published through the U.S. National

Library of Medicine and National Institute of Health. The most current version of this

article is from September of 2010. This information is relevant to my topic because the

author describes the positives and negatives of using technology. I know this source is

reliable and correct because it is from a reliable website and the author lists over one

hundred references. Bavelier says that the field of study on technology is still ongoing

and that she, at the moment, does not have any bias of one side over the other.

This (Indent) source is helpful for my research because it gives me more insight on my

overall topic. I was able to see another point of view and discover more positive and

negative effects of technology. This was a long source that went very in depth with the

examination and research on the topic. The article helps shape my argument in a way that

I am able to think more clearly on the topic. In particular, I gained from this source that

you can argue either side of the topic and that it is an ongoing process. This source did

not change how I think about my topic, but it has given me more knowledge on the topic.

This source will appear in my project because it is a reliable source that brings useful

information to my research and topic.

Fitz, Nicholas S., and Peter B. Reiner. “Perspective: Time to expand the mind.” Nature, vol. 531,

no. 7592, 2016, doi:10.1038/531s9a.

This (Indent) is a peer-reviewed journal article that talks about the mind and technology.

The source starts off by talking about how we can improve our mental capabilities by

using technology and the science behind it. Reliance on technology has been growing

consistently for a while and the evidence shows that everyone is using technology. The

journal article discusses how we should incorporate technology with the human mind and

help ourselves develop. I believe this is a far stretched idea and something that the world

is not ready for yet. This source is different because it talks about technology use while

discussing the mind and what it does for/to us.

The (Indent) main author of this source is Nicholas Fitz. He is a graduate student for

Neuroethics at the University of British Columbia. This information is reliable because it

is from a peer-reviewed journal article and gives information important to my topic. The

purpose of this source is to give the authors point of view on his knowledge of

technology and the human mind. This also goes along with the human capabilities.

This (indent) source was helpful in a sense that I was able to get an understanding of

one’s view point on the relationship between technology and the human mind. It was

useful to be able to see how this coincides with my research. Although, I don’t believe I

will use this source for my project because I think it might be too far outside of the box

for me to use, it was a good source to read and understand.

Kamenetz, Anya. “Screen Addiction Among Teens: Is There Such A Thing?” NPR, NPR, 5 Feb.

2018, www.npr.org/sections/ed/2018/02/05/579554273/screen-addiction-among-teens-is-

there-such-a-thing

This article is a developed news story from a popular source. This source is about screen

addiction and if there is such a thing. The main point of this source is what happens when

somebody becomes addicted to screen time, if that can even happen. The author says in

the article that there is a half way split between scientists that (who) believe you can

become addicted to technology and scientists who don’t believe it. The author discusses

he conversation with a friend of hers saying that addiction can happen in anybody,

(Refers to a conversation between her and a friend discussing the fact that addiction can

happen in anybody,) but that people just don’t want to accept it. Then, in the middle of

the article, the author describes how (the ways in which)one can get treatment for such

addiction and how to control it. In the end statement, the author talks about an app that

you can download to stop you from using social media apps or things like that. (Other

distracting components of technology) Overall, the whole point is to not get

overwhelmed with technology and to make sure to use it in strides.(To use technology in

moderation) Don’t let yourself get addicted. (This sentence could be incorporated into

the previous sentence some how because it is short)

The (Indent) author of the source is Anya Kamenetz. She graduated from Yale University

and has written many books about technology use.(The use of technology) By examining

the authors work I can tell that the information in this particular piece (Source) is reliable

and useful for me. This source is published on NPR’s website (And a , after website) and

the purpose is to inform her audience of the dangers of technology use and to moderate it.

(Why it should be used in moderation) This article is different from my other sources

because it only focuses on one side of the view point. It only discusses addiction and

what it can do to a person.

This (Indent) source is helpful to my research because it gives me a different point of

view. It shows just the negative side of technology and describes what can happen when

one becomes addicted to technology. This helps me to shape my argument in a way that I

can see how one becomes addicted to technology, how to recover from it, and how to

avoid it. These are critical questions to ask in the world that we live in today because we

are surrounded by technology. I am not sure yet, but I think I will use this source in my

project because it gives good knowledge on the negative side of technology and explains

an important topic in that: (Associated with the use of technology, addiction.) addiction.

Sinha, Chitraparna. “Sick or Slick? The Impact of Technology on Human Behavior.” Business 2

impact-technology-human-behavior-01637239.

This (Indent) is a reliable website source that covers my topic. The main point of the

source is how technology impacts human behavior. I liked how the article listed at the

beginning a few examples of how technology is different today from people born in the

1990’s. (In the beginning of this article, it listed a few ways in which technology has a

different effect on people born today than in the 1990s) It starts off the article by making

you think back about your own experiences and puts you into a first-person perspective

about the topic. It also shows in a chart that people aged 18-24 use their phones and are

more dependent than older people. (The article uses a chart to show how that people

around the age of 18-24 are more dependent than older people.) The website describes

four ways in which technology controls human behavior. The four terms are: emotional

dependence, physical dependence, societal dependence, and personal dependence.

Something I agreed with and thought was interesting in the article was the author said

that technology “should make us progressive and not complacent”. It is good for

technology to continue to progress, but our dependence should stop.

The (Indent) author of this source is Chitraparna Sinha. The source is published on a

reliable website. She is part of the B2C program, which is a credible website for a source.

She used research gathered in her article to explain more in depth her points. The

intended audience is anyone that is interested in learning about technology’s impact on

human behavior. This compares with my other sources because this article brings in the

effects of technology on the human mind, specifically the behaviors. I believe Sinha

wrote this article to inform people about the impact that technology (The impact
Clements !7

technology has) has on human behavior. She talks about how technology is a good thing

but that the dependence that many people have with technology is not good.

This source helps me gain a piece of my topic. I had information in my other sources for

the overall point, but I wanted a source about how technology impacts human behaviors.

The knowledge I gained from this source will help me throughout this project. It did not

change how I thought about my topic, but it allowed me to see a different point of view

on my topic. I definitely plan on using this source for my project.
