Organizing Research by Questions

Use this chart to organize your primary and secondary research. Write your
issue question at the top and begin to divide your research into various
perspectives that address that question. Some sources might address
more than one question.

Research Question 1: What themes, ideas, and arguments have

emerged on your topic/issue and what you learned about the
subject matter by conducting this research?

Perspective 1

Author Quotes/Ideas

Antonio Regalado -Genetic Engineering (GE) is more

beneficial than harmful

-We would not survive without it

-Food supply is good only because
of GE

Author Quotes/Ideas

Paul Knoefpler -GE will happen whether we want it

to or not
-GE on humans will happen sooner
than we think
-GE will save lives

Perspective 2

Author Quotes/Ideas

FDA -GE modified foods are safe

-GE foods have been in existence

for decades

Author Quotes/Ideas
-GE is a scary topic to think about
and we should avoid it
Julia Friedberg
-We have survived this long without
GE why start now

Perspective 3

Author Quotes/Ideas

-GE will create a have vs have not

mentality
Zoe Duke

Author Quotes/Ideas

Jimmy Thompson -GE is a cool idea that definitely

has enough validity to be explored

My research Does my research answer this

question in any way?

GE on food Yes and no. My research showed

that GE is necessary to maintain
the basic food supply but did not
prove whether or not it is 100%
nonharmful.

Research Question 2: How is the research discussed differently in

different fields? Consider at least two different disciplinary
perspectives here, though more would be even better.

Perspective 1

Author Quotes/Ideas

-Talked in a collegiate manner

Antonio Regalado -High degree of aptitude

-Strong background on the topic

Author Quotes/Ideas

Paul Knoefpler -Strong background on the topic,

insider

-Positive outlook on the topic of GE

Perspective 2

Author Quotes/Ideas

-Indifferent

FDA -Based more on food than people

Author

-Looked at it from an outside

perspective
Julia Friedberg
-Asked questions in a rhetorical
manner
-Acknowledges it is in existence but
refuses to believe it is as soon as
the scientific world says it will be

Perspective 3

Author Quotes/Ideas

-Professional perspective

Zoe Duke -Described thoughts from a parents

perspective

-Talked in a scientific manner

Author Quotes/Ideas
Jimmy Thompson -No background on the topic

-Answering purely based on opinion

rather than fact

My research Does my research answer this

question in any way?

Coming from a wide range of

business professionals, to children,
to parents we received much
needed backgrounds on each and
every person, along with their facts
and opinions.

Research Question 3: In which genres is the research presented and

what do you notice as you think about how genre affects the way
the topic is discussed?

Perspective 1

Author Quotes/Ideas

Antonio Regalado -News Article

-Pure facts, statistics, primary
sources

-No thoughts or opinions, no bias

Author Quotes/Ideas

Paul Knoefpler -TED Talk

-Mix of facts and opinion

-Focused more on human GE than

any other form of GE
Perspective 2

FDA -News Article

-Pure facts, statistics, primary
sources

-No thoughts or opinions, no bias

Author Quotes/Ideas

Julia Friedberg -All opinion/thoughts

on GE

Author Quotes/Ideas

-Interview

Jimmy Thompson -All opinion/thoughts

-No real personal interaction with
GE besides food

-Child himself

My research Does my research answer this

question in any way?

By having a range of sources who

are very involved in the topic and
not as much, it is interesting to see
how the facts lineup. For example,
most people are focused so much
on the food aspect of GE because
they come into contact with it
everyday and are ok with food GE.
However, a majority feel unsafe
with human GE due to the fact that
it is not a widely performed act.

Research Question 4: Why is it necessary to know about your topic

as a part of this course? Discuss the value of this research in terms
of critical research and writing.

Perspective 1

Author Quotes/Ideas

Antonio Regalado -Discusses how GE can change our

future for the better

-Discusses the statistics of how our

food supply would diminish rapidly
without GE

Author Quotes/Ideas

the ideals of knowing that your
childs friend may have been
created in a lab?”

food supply would diminish rapidly
without GE

-Potential to help or hurt depending

on how its used

Author Quotes/Ideas

-“I think it is an awesome concept

to be able to choose your child’s
Julia Friedberg physical traits - such as eye color -
however I find it creepy to choose
their personality traits like
extrovertedness or intelligence...”

Perspective 3

Author Quotes/Ideas

-“I am surprised that the world has

come to a place where parents are
Zoe Duke able to manipulate the physical
traits of their unborn children.
However, I don’t really believe that
genetic engineering can work in
any perspective other than food
modification.”

Author Quotes/Ideas

Jimmy Thompson “It’s crazy to see that science has

come such a long way in a short
period of time. I’m amazed by the
advancements that scientists have
been able to make in the industry.”

My research Does my research answer this

question in any way?

Although it does not answer the

question head on, it creates a
separate question of how do we a
society come together and come up
with laws and regulations to define
what you can and can’t do in the
field of GE. While we may think it is
a cool and fun concept, GE can
have negative consequences. How
much will it cost to create a child?
