Teacher(s): Marie Weidner

Date: March 21st 2018

Subject / Grade Level: English 7th Grade

Materials: ‘Australia’ Worksheet, book excerpt, ‘Necktie’ Worksheet, Stargirl, colored pencils and markers

State Standard: W.7.3a Engage and orient the reader by establishing a context and point of view and introducing a
narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally and logically.

Lesson Objective(s): The students will be able to tell how an author engages a reader by introducing a narrator,
characters, plot, and setting. Students will also be able to answer these questions: What are the elements of a
narrative? How do writers engage an audience with a narrative?

Anticipatory Set:
Begin by asking students if they know what a Narrative is and what it consists of. Then discuss as a class until you come to a
consensus on the different parts of a narrative. Then transition into Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No good, Very Bad Day.
Hand out excerpt and ask if anyone has read it before, also hand out accompanying worksheet. Go over the worksheet with the
students so they know what they are looking for as they independently read the excerpt. Give them a few minutes to read and fill
out worksheet and share answers allowed with class. Transition into Stargirl reading and activities.
