Session 2018-2019
Assessment
Assessment is a tool to judge the teaching and learning process. Assessments are a vital
component for a high-quality early childhood program. They are an important tool in
understanding and supporting young children's development.
Progress checklist is specially designed to help and guide teachers that how to maintain
the child development record.

Assessment Policy
According to ‘THE EDUCATORS’ assessment policy, We believe in continuous assessment which
includes:
a. observation
b. use of standardized assessment tasks
c. maintenance of children portfolios of work
The process is designed to provide teachers, children and parents with accurate feedback
as well.

Observing children in the Pre-School

Teachers know about each individual child by observing them at his/her task in the class. This
observation would help them to understand where each child is and what kind of support and
guidance will be required by the child to move on in his/her learning. Teachers observe children
spontaneously as well as target children for observation. All observations must be recorded in the
Progress Checklist provided by the head office, to maintain the record of child’s development in all
learning areas. The recordings serve as evidence and help teachers to recall important incidents
while reporting to the parents.
Use of standardized assessment tasks
It is usually based on conceptual learning in different areas e.g. English, Urdu, Math and General
Knowledge etc. a standardized task is given to the children in form of worksheets to assess any
particular area. Worksheets from Activity Pad can be used as a standardized assessment tasks with
teachers’ remarks on it and should be maintained in the portfolios.
Maintenance of children portfolios of work
Children’s portfolio serves two functions, it identifies areas for improvement and it recognizes and
rewards progress and achievement. Portfolio is a purposeful collection of student work that exhibits
the student efforts, progress, and achievements.

The portfolio of work:

 contains evidence of achievement in the form of samples of school work selected by the child
as well as his/her teacher from across the curriculum
 is stored in an A4 file for each child
 provides the child with a sense of ownership and motivation
The contents of the portfolio include:
 samples of work selected by the child
 samples of work selected by the teacher
 certificates, stars etc.

Progress Checklist for KG (2018-19) Page 1 of 10

All areas of experience are represented in the portfolio; teachers use photographs as and when
required.
All samples of work carry comments by the teachers which include the date and other relevant
information.
The portfolio records the progress made by each child from his/her point of entry into the
Pre-School till his/her exit.

At the end of the Pre-School phase the portfolio becomes the property of the child/parents.

Continuous assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning. It informs the teachers what the
child knows and this feed into his/her teaching.
Continuous assessment is an essential part of THE EDUCATORS policy. Teachers are required to take
two informal assessments in the 1st term. First assessment will be taken in the middle of the 1st term
and second assessment will be taken at the end of the first tem. Record will be maintained in the
given Progress Checklist.

Assessment Guidelines of Progress Report (Term II) for KG Teachers

The most important reason for assessing children at this level is for teachers to identify children’s
achievements and to determine areas for improvement. It serves as the basis to report to parents.

Keeping in view its importance THE EDUCATORS has developed a complete system of Children
Assessment Procedure (doc. No. ACA-WI- of the Pre-school Academic Manual). It is recommended
especially for KG Teachers to use a combination of observations and formal assessments to evaluate
their own teaching and make improvements. A detailed instruction is given below:
