Cooling System and Petrochemical Industry

Petrochemical industries generate large quantities of waste heat. Therefore, cooling system considerations
constitute an important aspect of petrochemical development schemes. Technically feasible and economically
favorable industrial cooling solutions are essential. To best optimize the efficiency of a cooling system, a
“systems approach” should be used to identify potential savings and performance enhancement. This approach
looks at the entire cooling system, including the pumps, motors, fans, nozzles, fill, drift losses, evaporative
losses, blow down, makeup rate, chemicals, flow rates, temperatures, pressure drop, as well as operating
and maintenance practices. By focusing on the whole system as opposed to just individual components, the
system can be configured to avoid inefficiencies and energy losses. Cooling systems do not operate under
one condition all the time and system loads vary according to cyclical demands, environmental conditions,
and changes in process requirements.

Thermal Design Aspects of Shell and Tube Type

Heat Exchanger
Heat transfer is the most important and applied operation in chemical and allied industries. Economy and Energy
of plant operations are controlled by effective utilization of heat energy. From the viewpoint of engineering, an
optimum design is obtained via maximum heat transfer rate at minimum cost. Shell and tube type is the most
dominant type of heat exchanger in process plants today and in many cases it is the best or only option. On
the other hand, too often shell-and tubes are selected almost “by default” because of familiar technology. The
design procedure depends on using the acceptable pressure drops in order to minimize the thermal surface area
for a certain service, involving discrete decision variables. Designers need to consider some additional aspects
such as geometrical features and velocity conditions for an efficient design. The optimization algorithm is based
on an exploration of different factors involved including the tube count where the established constraints and
the investigated designers are employed to eliminate non optimal alternatives, thus the number of rating run
simulations executed get reduced which also stands for time management.

Process Monitoring Solutions for Boiler-Feed and

Cooling Water Streams in Power Plants
Nearly 50 per cent of unplanned downtime in power plants is caused due to contaminants or problems in
the chemistry of the water-steam circuit, with corrosion being the primary factor. Every cooling circuit has
a unique design and thus its own unique challenges. The specifics of the water che-mistry to be regulated
(and therefore the applicable limits) depend on the type of power plant, the cooling circuit design, and
construction materials. Timely and effective monitoring of power plant water chemistry is critical for
maintaining efficiency and safety. By using online analyzers, operators gain the information they need to
accurately identify trends and address operational issues before costly problems arise. In this review, we
highlight the importance of such real-time analyzers in boiler-feed and cooling water streams to optimize
safety and plant efficiency.

Agitated Nutsche Filter Dryers

The S2 ANFDs are innovatively designed and engineered to help improve plant operational process
efficiency. S2 Engg’s ANFDs feature a differential mixing agitator that moves vertically for thorough
mixing. It has a series of sharp curved blades that achieve mixing penetration in difficult cakes without
causing undue product stress. While moving and lifting the cake media around the vessel, agitation
mixing efficiency is achieved through differential velocities.
A key benefit of the S2 design is that the dried/semi-dried cake can be washed after filtration by
reslurrying the cake within an automated operational cycle for as many times as required. The cake
is then discharged by lowering the agitator and rotating it in such a manner that it brings all the cake
towards the discharge port. S2 Engg provides integral barrier isolator (glove box) technology for
contained discharge and charging operations of hazardous potent and toxic products.
The S2 solution minimises any waste cake through innovative equipment design. The automated dual
piece ANFD model with detachable filter and bayonet or super clamp design improves filter access,
maintenance and cleaning in a highly efficient and labour saving manner.

Bale Dewiring
The Bale Dewiring machine removes wire strappings automatically from corded
bales. The bales are placed on to the chain belt conveyor. The cutting and
removing mechanism adjusts automatically to the individual bale size and
density. The removed wires are packed and discharged to the bottom.

Employment of staff for bale cutting is no longer necessar y. The wire

strappings are under high tension and may cause serious injuries when
cut by hand. The bale dewiring machine increases operational safety by
preventing such accidents.

It is recommended to operate the bale dewiring machine combined with the

tried and tested BB bale breaker. The material is unraveled and transformed into a loose and metered material stream. The bale
contents are perfectly prepared for sorting without any damage to the material.

The advantages are obvious. It is ensured that the downstream aggregates are utilized in an optimal way. A complete automation

Pre-treatmnent Plants
Typically the raw water pre-treatment units include media filtration, softening and ultra-filtration unit as standard
feature. Media filtration is an important first step to achieve clean water to feed to RO. The sand media is
carefully selected and graded to ensure highest results. All pre-engineered standard package plants have FRP
vessels as per ASME Sec X with manual multiport valve or frontal valves and piping assembly. The filters can
be supplied in fully automatic mode of operation on request. Typically the pre-treatment also include a softener
for removing monovalent cations causing hardness to ensure scale free plant operation. We use uniform particle
size resin which gives highest regeneration efficiency and lowest hardness in outlet water quality. As a standard
feature all softening plants are supplied with manual mode of operation, however, on request we can supply
softening plants with automatic mode of operation also.Ultrafiltration in the pre-treatment ensures a consistent
RO feed water quality of SDI less than 3.0. This minimises the fouling of RO by particulates and other suspended
impurities. The UF used is hollow fine fibre constructed of either PVDF or modified PES to achieve a high quality of the filtrate. Typically we adopt
a conservative approach in UF design to ensure a long trouble-free operation. An important feature of our UF is provision of online UF membrane
integrity test facility which warns of UF fibre breakage if any. All UF plants are fully automatic.

Extruder-Spheroniser
The extruder spheroniser is a self-contained compact system for the special
purpose of making pellets with GMP compliance.
System is specially used for making dense pallets for controlled release solid
dosage of oral form with minimum expicients. Extruder is the necessary first step
for spheronisation. Extruder is often used to eliminate dust in formulation even
when spheronization is not the final objective.
The raw material to be extruded is introduced axially from the feed hopper into
screw housing where it is exposed to rotating screw which conveys the material
towards rotor. Rotor forces the material to pass through the mesh with the effect of scraping impact resulting in formation of
cylindrical extrudes. The size of the extruder screen operature will dictate the size of the spheroids. The extrudes are dropped
axially from the feed hopper into the spheroniser on the rotating checker plate to get sized; further exposure to the checker plate
results in conversion of the extrudes into the shape of spheres, ie, pellets. The groove pattern used for the checkered plate is
cross-hatched square pattern, which forms a grid of truncated pyramids on the processing surface.

Self-priming Mud Pumps

The Lubi LBM Series are self-priming, horizontal, single stage, centrifugal, end-suction pumps.
Pumps are available from 0.75 to 7.5 kW in three-phase power supply. Motor and pump are
close coupled in a convenient and compact design for quick installation in limited space. They
are also available as bare pump unit which are suitable for coupling with motor/engine. The
pump is fitted with a gland packing and single piece pump-motor shaft (in close coupled version).
Mechanical shaft seal is available in 0.75 kW models. These pumps have suction port above
pump axis and radial discharge port. These pumps have non-clogging open type impeller which
can handle liquids with solids up to 20 mm grain size. These pumps are engineered to draw from
liquid sources below ground level or from sources which have no positive pressure to naturally
prime the pump. These pumps are inherently designed to allow the pump to re-prime itself typically under lift conditions. Only first time priming is
required to remove the air from the system. The pump will re-prime itself even if partially filled with liquid and with completely empty suction pipe.
These pumps are very effective to eliminate the need for foot valves, vacuum and ejector pumps which can become clogged or be impractical
to use for prolonged or remote operation.

COD Analysis System

.

As a leading manufacturer in this field, Spectralab Instruments offer a broad range of

environment products. COD analysis system is one of them.
The chemical oxygen demand (COD) test is used to estimate the amount of organic
matter in wastewater. Most types of organic matter are oxidized by a boiling mixture of
chromic and sulphuric acid. A sample is refluxed in strong acid solution with a known
excess of potassium dichromate. After digestion, the remaining unreduced K 2Cr 2O 7 is
titrated with FAS to determine the amount of K 2Cr 2O 7 consumed and the oxidizable
organic matter is calculated in terms of oxygen equivalent.
The Spectralab COD test system is open reflux method. It is suitable for wide range of
wastewater - a large sample size is preferred. This system is followed by the American
Standard Test (APHA) method. There is no need to circulate water; precise digestion with digital timer and buzzer; results on display
by using COD Titrator Model CT-15 are some of its features.
COD digestor is being used by almost all regulating, environmental institutes and industries. Solid block heated units with provision
for 6 and 15 samples at a time using air condensers with uniformity of temperature.
COD titrator is a microprocessor-based design that speeds up the titration process giving advantage like automation, accuracy, result
in storage, printout, etc.

Batch Mixer

The batch mixer operates on the hurling and whirling principle introduced by Lodige to the mixing
technology and technical literature.

The mixing elements ensure constant and total involvement of all product particles - preventing the
formation of dead or low movement zones. In that way components of extremely different bulk density
and structure can be mixed; even mixing in of aerosils for example is achieved homogenously and
without demixing. The resultant individualisation of the particles in the mix (fluid bed) allows the
addition of liquids and coating of the particles with ease. If necessary, high-speed choppers provide
additional support of the mixing process. Ploughshare Shovels can be modified for intensive and
gentle mixing of fragile components even at low speeds. Reducing the peripheral speed to <1 m/
sec is possible, depending on the product properties. Pastes and pumpable mixture can be processed with suitably adjusted mixing elements.
