Subject: 3
rd Math Central Focus: S
olving one step word problems
involving masses or volumes
Common Core Objective: Date taught:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.A.2
Measure and estimate liquid volumes and
masses of objects using standard units of
grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l).1 Add,
subtract, multiply, or divide to solve one-step
word problems involving masses or volumes
that are given in the same units, e.g., by using
drawings (such as a beaker with a
measurement scale) to represent the
problem.
Daily Lesson Objective:
Performance- S tudents will independently solve one-step word problems using measurements.
Conditions- Independent
Criteria- S
tudents are expected to receive 8 out of 10 points.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills needed:
Activity Description of Activities and Setting Time
1. Engage The teacher will display a slide with the question: 3 min.
‘What are the units of measurement we have learned
this week? (Move the rectangle to check your
answer.)’ Underneath it will be a picture of a milk
carton, a dictionary, a paper clip, and a dropper. The
students will need to math the unit with the picture.
2. Explore The teacher will put three word problems on the wall 5 min.
(including solutions of major tasks) around the room.
1. A chimpanzee weighs 52 kg. A zebra weighs
408 kg. What is the combined weight of the
two animals?”
2. I had some sugar in a bag. I added another
250g to give me a total of 375g of sugar.
How much sugar did I have to begin with?
3. A pen has a mass of 10 grams. What is the
mass of 5 identical pens?
The students will get up and in their math notebooks
solve the problems. As the students work the
teacher will monitor and ask questions such as, “
What is your answer? How did you find it? What
strategy did you use?” and assess how the students
are doing.
3. Explain The students will come back to the carpet. The 10 min
teacher will say, “ You all did a great job. Let’s see if
we can explain what we did by using problem one as
our example. How did we solve this problem? Let’s
use our cube strategy to show our thinking. What is
our first step? (circle the key numbers) What our are
key numbers? (52 kg and 408 kg). What is our next
step? (underline the question). What is this question
asking? (What is the combined weight of the two
animals?). So, what is our third step? (box action
words). What are our action words? Now, we need to
evaluate our thinking. How are we going to solve the
problem? (The students will add the two numbers).”
4. Elaborate/Extend The students who need additional support will be
read the problems out loud and work in partners to
solve.
The students who need a challenge will be able to
create their own one step word problem using
masses and volumes.
5. Evaluate Students will be given an exit ticket (attached
(assessment methods) below). Students can receive up to 10 points. 5
points for solving the problem, 2 points for the
picture, and 3 points for the equation.
