Stewardship and Development Thoughts from Judy Held
President, Catholic Foundation of Eastern Montana
Stewardship Thought: “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater
love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” – JOHN 15:1213
Do you love Jesus? Do you consider Him your friend? Jesus says that if we love Him we would be
willing to offer whatever we have to Him, not because we want praise and glory, but simply because we
love Him. Does your giving seem mechanical out of obligation or do you share freely out of love?

Tentative Settlement for the Lawsuits Announced!
You may have seen articles that the diocese has come to a tentative settlement to resolve the abuse lawsuits
and Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The great news is that it's true! Although it is not set in stone, it does allow us
to see a potential end to this difficult time. This settlement allows us to finally make some reparation for
the horrible acts committed against children in the past, and resolve to never allow it to happen again.
We know, however, that it won't be over, even when the settlement is approved. There will be some pain on
the part of each parish in contributing to this settlement. The bishop will release a letter in the next couple
weeks giving more information. That letter will also be published in the bulletin.

Remember, The Eucharist Is Not a Symbol

For the past 2 months St. Mary’s has been able to have a beautiful display of Eucharistic Miracles for the
700’s ad. to current time. This display was designed by the Vatican and promoted to be displayed in all the
Catholic Churches around the world. This display will be moving to another parish in our Diocese. I hope
members of our parish had time to look it over and appreciate it.
The Holy Eucharist is not just a symbol of Christ’s spiritual presence. It is not just a reminder of Christ’s self-
offering in the past. No, Jesus Christ is truly present in this Sacrament. That is why we refer to the Real Pres-
ence. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “In the most blessed sacrament of the Holy Eucharist
the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and, therefore, the whole
Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained.”
Our belief in this Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist derives from the literal interpretation of the
promise of Christ to give us His Body and Blood for our spiritual food and drink, as found in St. John’s Gos-
pel, Chapter 6, and also in the four independent accounts of the fulfillment of this promise at the Last Sup-
per (Matthew 26; Mark 14; Luke 22; 1 Corinthians 11).
Eucharistic theologians explain the Real Presence by a process called transubstantiation: the entire sub-
stance of bread and wine is changed into the entire substance of the risen and glorified Body and Blood
of Christ, retaining only the “accidents” (taste, color, shape) of bread and wine. Can there be a religion in
which God is closer to man than our Catholic Faith?
Sometimes We Forget This
It is good to remember that since it is the Risen Christ who is present in the consecrated Bread and Wine,
He is not divided. He is wholly present in both species—both the Consecrated Bread and the Consecrated
Wine. Therefore, we receive the whole Christ and are not deprived of any grace when we receive Holy
Communion under one form only. ( Fr. Richard W. Frank)
