Summary of Lesson
Day 1: Adding Decimals with
Two Place Values
Students will learn how to
model adding decimals with a
place value chart. Then, they
will connect this model to the
algorithm use to add decimals.
Day 2: Adding Decimal with
Four Place Values
Students will learn how to add
decimals with two place values
and how regroup correctly.
Objectives
1. Studentes will be able to
recognized that ten groups of
tenths is the same as one group
of ones and that this process is
called regrouping.
2.Students will be able to
represent adding decimals
using a place value chart.
3.Students will be able to
represent regrouping in
addition algorithmically by
connecting the place value
chips model with the standard
algorithm for adding and
subtracting decimals.

Day 3: Subtracting Decimals
and Mental Math
Students will do more mental
math and sharing the strategies
they used to solve the problem.
Students will also learn how to
subtract decimals. I will show
them regrouping with the
Place-Value Chart model.
Students will also learn why
the largest number must be
placed on top and when to
regroup.
Day 4: Math Project
Students will work on a one
day project that will allow
them to use decimal addition
and subtraction skills in
another context. Students will
be able to go to the computer
lab and look up prices of
different items they want to
hypothetically buy. The student
must record the price and then
add up all the prices to identify
if they have enough budget.

Day 5: Word Problems
I will teach the students four
different strategies to use when
solving word problems.
Students will be given a word
problem to solve based on their
mathematical strategies. They
will work on the problem on
their own and then with three
to four other people who have
the same problem. They will
share strategies and their
solutions.
Day 6: Review Game
Students will play Trash
Basket Review Game. The
students will answer a math
problem and if they get the
answer right, then they can
shoot for a basket to obtain
points for their team.
Day 7: Test
Students will take their Adding
and Subtraction test from the
Math in Focus Fourth Grade
Curriculum.
