Hospitals &
Medical Centers
Situation
With the rapid advance in medical technology, hospitals, medical clinics and laboratories increasingly
rely on sophisticated electronic devices for diagnosis, treatment and monitoring. This reliance, in
turn, demands a high degree of power quality and reliability to prevent disruption of mission-critical
operations and procedures. Power quality disturbances can be caused by a range of internal and

Signature The Signature System is a key element of the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system for a

System quickly leading hospital’s mission-critical systems, particularly its Angio Suite-Cath Lab. The Cath Lab
requires 125 Amps RMS (peak draw of 380 Amps) per phase during high mVA angioplasty x-rays.

the location Although a Piller UPS system was installed to protect the x-ray systems, the Signature System was
employed as a proactive verification and maintenance resource. The Signature System included
and nature three key monitoring points throughout the hospital to monitor the utility supply at the UPS input,
of the problem the output of the critically important UPS, and the downstream input to the Cath Lab.

so it can be The Signature System was selected for its comprehensive power quality monitoring capabilities,
including its ability to capture and pinpoint difficult-to-find power quality problems that can result
rectified in costly downtime and equipment erosion. Plus, the real time response of the Signature System

immediately and its web-browser interface enables the customer to address problems quickly and prevent
them from recurring.
Signature System™
Results
When a lightning strike triggered a fault on the utility feed causing a momentary outage of the Cath
Lab, the Signature System identified the location and nature of the problem. The Signature System
revealed that there was indeed an interruption of the utility supply but the UPS provided a “clean”
supply to the load and operated properly. The data provided by the Signature System enabled the
customer to determine that the x-ray EPO (Emergency Power Off) switch was fed from emergency
— not UPS — power. Inspection revealed a wiring error that was immediately corected. As a result,
Trillium is looking to expand their Signature System application and incorporate it within their IT network.
