Problem Set 1
Due Date: September 16, 2016 at 2:00 PM

Directions: Solve all problems COMPLETELY. This probset is by pair. Work independently from other
pairs.

1. Determine the minimum moment M and its orientation α with respect to the z-axis
(positive direction is to the right) required to produce a maximum flexural stress of
3000 psi in a beam with a rectangular cross-section of 6” wide by 12” deep (y-axis is
parallel to the 12”-side).

2. Determine the ratio of the plastic moment
and the maximum elastic moment for the
beam shown which is made of elasto-plastic
material.

3. Determine the maximum moment that should be applied in the curved beam shown
if the maximum compressive flexural stress is 100 MPa and the maximum tensile
flexural stress is 200 MPa.

4. The reinforced concrete beam is made using two
steel reinforcing rods with diameter equal to 16
mm. If the allowable tensile stress for the steel is
275 MPa and the allowable compressive stress
for the concrete is 21 MPa, determine the
maximum moment M that can be applied to the
section. Assume the concrete cannot support a
tensile stress.
Est= 200 000 MPa
Econc= 26 000 MPa

5. Determine the allowable bending
moment for the composite beam
of wood and steel having the
cross-sectional dimensions shown
in the figure. Materials are
fastened together so that they act
as a unit. Est = 200 GPa; Ew = 8.3
GPa. The allowable bending
stresses are σst = 140 MPa and σw
= 8.3 MPa.

6. For the given cross-section, determine the location of the shear center in terms of r
and α.
