BACKGROUND

I was born in Makassar, Indonesia and brought up in a simple family in Surabaya, Indonesia. I have been
living in Surabaya for 18 years now. Because we wandered from Makassar to Surabaya on our own, I
have to be able to socialize to pick up some friends to adapt with the new environment because when I
moved in to Surabaya, I went straight to kindergarten. I lived in multicultural neighborhood, because
they came from different areas in Indonesia which enables me to expand my worldview since I met
them all.

My parents are not that educated, yet they give me strong foundations toward education and character
buildings. My parents always told me to behave well and be a person people like the most. They also
support everything I do, including taking my master degree to Taiwan as needs to enhance skills and
sharpen knowledge. I fancy Civil Engineering since I was young, around 9 years old because of the
development of tall buildings which my uncle participated in, which I usually witnessed after school.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

My secondary school years are spent in one of the top high school in Surabaya, Frateran Senior High
School. The school culture which emphasize on excellency indeed push me to try my very best in
academic and also develop my confident through co-curricular activities.

I have always wanted to study in university and the dream came into realization as I stepped into Petra
Christian University in Surabaya, entering with a CGPA of 3.45 out of 4.0 in Civil Engineering degree. I
enjoy the studies very much in university. The faculty of education provides me the knowledge I am
longing for. My favorite subjects are concrete and steel structures and also green building related
subjects. I find it interesting because that is what today’s construction needs. My thesis is about seismic
rehabilitation which is the reason why I pursue my education to Taiwan, to do assessment with the
professor there about tall buildings and how to build green and sustainable environment

MOTIVATION OF STUDY

I want to go into research to explore seismic rehabilitation and green buildings related topics even
more. The reason why I want that is because of today’s demand in civil engineering field and I realize it
is important to educate people regarding this issue and I want to be the pioneer in it.

Taiwan is famous of engineering, especially in the topics I previously mentioned. The process of earning
a master and PhD degree in Taiwan is a solid phase of building up scholastic foundation. Indeed, the
universities in Taiwan are the nurturing ground for scholars, providing an enriching reading culture that
stimulates minds and lay down a foundation for researchers. That is what I am dreaming of, to soak into
the rich learning environment that is full of scholastic discussion, in order to develop myself to become
an expert in the civil engineering field.

One other thing that makes eager to study in Taiwan is Chinese language. I want to pick Chinese so that I
can communicate more to people in every corner of the world as nowadays China is growing so every
industry are in demand of people with Chinese ability. By picking up Chinese, I believe my chance to be
accepted in lots of industries in other countries are also higher and Taiwan is so far the best place to
study and improve Chinese.
STUDY PLAN

I have applied to National Cheng Kung University and National Taiwan University of Science and
technology for the educational policy and administration master program. I wish to do research on
assessment and green building issues. I believe doing research in an international context and
comparing to other countries will ignite creativity and gain a new perspective on ways to improve
quality of me. Furthermore, I have worked for a building contractor for a year which I understand
thoroughly how construction works. I believe the experience I have will create deep understanding to
my course. I believe if I am given a chance to study in master program, I can be a researcher that helps
the development of this field. During the study period, I will dedicate my time and energy and try my
best to follow the requirement of the graduate institute.

CAREER PLAN

I am planning to work in Taiwan after I graduate to learn more and gain as many experience I can have
to deeply understand the field in civil engineering. I wish also I do research that can be implemented to
the daily construction works because I understand that some researchers separate real life and
academic. If I am given a chance, I wish to go back to any national government and give all that I have
learned to enhance the quality of construction works. I wish to contribute my expertise to help review
and improve the policy.

CONCLUSION

I believe with my academic background and my expertise in education field for the pass years qualify me
to be a suitable candidate for master program in education field. My passion and my enthusiastic will
empower me to drill into research at a deeper level. With the offer of scholarship, I will able to pursue
the dream of improving civil engineering and bring in benefits to the construction field. Thus, I hope that
MOE will consider my application for the scholarship.
