OUR MISSION
TO CONSERVE
BIODIVERSITY
WORLDWIDE

Established in 1934, The North of England Zoological

Society (NEZS) is the charity that operates Chester Zoo.

Over the years, more than 60 million people have walked

through our gates and helped us become the ‘UK’s No. 1
charity zoo’.

Our mission is to be a major force in conserv-

ing biodiversity worldwide. To achieve this
we invest both funds and technical support
into over 90 conservation projects around
the globe.
Our dedicated staff put their globally acclaimed skills
into practice; caring for the animals at the Zoo, training
others around the world, advising on best practice,
assisting with field projects and ultimately playing a
major role in preventing the extinction of both animals
and plants for future generations.

Chester Zoo is a showcase for the conservation work that

takes place behind the scenes and outside the Zoo,
helping to promote a deeper understanding of our
cause, whilst still offering a fun and educational family
day out.

As a charity we rely on sourcing additional

funding to support our work.

NATURAL VISION
A VISION
FOR THE FUTURE

In 2009, Chester Zoo unveiled an

ambitious £225 million development
plan that will see it transformed into the
largest conservation, animal and leisure
attraction of its kind in Europe.
The project – with the working title ‘Natural Vision’ – will
involve a £90 million first phase which will include a
unique domed ecosystem.

Called ‘Heart of Africa’, the bio-dome will be an African

rainforest-themed sanctuary for a group of Gorillas, a
large troop of Chimpanzees, Okapi (rare giraffe-like
creatures) and a wide variety of tropical birds,
amphibians, reptiles, fishes and invertebrates, moving
freely among lush vegetation.

New and exciting animal species will be introduced.

This project is unlike anything in the UK and will offer a
spectacular visitor experience and the highest standards
of animal welfare.

for one day.

sessions at Chester Zoo – teaching to up to 5600 primary
or secondary school children about conservation and
the environment, all linked to the National Curriculum.
£5,000 would help towards funding one of our skilled
animal keepers or vets.

have key expertise and are making a positive impact on
conservation, both here in the UK and abroad.
