I- Search Resume Reflection

When first receiving this project I was somewhat overwhelmed by having to

craft my future so soon. Ever since childhood, I knew I wanted to be in the medical

field but couldn’t decide what profession to choose. I could become the overworked

general doctor like my dad or the part-time nurse like my mother. This project forced

to me to actually look into my future and contemplate a position in a hospital staff.

Growing up in a environment where medicine is your livelihood, my sense of the

world of science has been centered on becoming a nurse. Several members of my

family revealed the assets of working as a nurse practitioner until I eventually saw

what a dream this job really is. Great benefits, an above average salary, and flexible

work hours meaning I can still live my life.

At first, I went searching for a nursing program similar to my sister’s at her

college, Dominican University. Their nursing program insures students achieve their

nursing license within four years. After four information compacted years of

schooling, the students would take the nursing license registration test to see if they

qualify to work as a healthcare professional. With the want to go to a prestigious

California university I began looking at UC’s offering the Bachelor of Science in

Nursing programs. Unfortunately, only two UC’s offer this major and those two are

UC Irvine and UCLA.

Immediately after researching their programs, I sent out emails to both

schools’ student affairs and administration office. UC Irvine emailed me back within

two days agreeing to an email interview. The UCLA students affairs coordinator

simply sent an email with an overview of their program. During a cause of a week, I

sent out my questions to both universities after receiving their emails. Unfortunately,

none of them responded.

This action made me recognize how busy and important the profession of

healthcare is. UC Irvine said they would answer my question but not in the time I

needed them because they are on spring break, event though I sent my questions in a

week before. While doing research about being a nurse practitioner I didn’t find any
surprising information considering with my mother being a nurse, I had already knew

about most of the responsibilities and expectations of the position. Even then, I was

shocked at the number of skills a nurse alone has to have in order to work.

This new found information made me reconsider my line of work. In the end,

however, my mind was unchanged. Knowing fully the competition and difficulty that

comes with the job and schooling, I’m prepared. Although, I am more determined to

make a greater effort to achieve my dreams and make the achievements on my

resume come true.
