Project Log

July 13th 3:50-6:00

This was the design stage, I took measurements of my head then figured out to use a old hard hat
as a base for the dome. I Drew out geometric shapes on poster board cut them out, then taped
them back together to form the Sprange, then taped that to my helmet. Produced only 2
successful Sprange designs.

July 25 5:45-8:05
This was my first workshop day. Me and Jeff measured the circumference of my forehead with
measuring tape, then hammered a steel band into that circumference. We then cut a flat
geometric model of what the base parts of the doom should be. Then we traced that onto 16 gage
steel, cut it out and hammered it around the steel band. Then we tacked the steel to the band.

July 26 5:45-7:30
Me and Jeff cut out another cardboard model, traced it onto another sheet of steel, then plasma
cut it out do to how hard it was to sheer it. Then hammered it around the steel band. Then we
tacked the steel to the band.

August 1st 5:30-8:30

Me and Jeff Hammered and taked the two pieces of the doom together. We then cut out the
Sprange with plasma, traced lines on the match the geometric shapes. We then put it into a press
to bend it into the faceplate that was desired. We took another sheet of metal and cut out two half
circular pieces and hammered them to make the parts of the rim. We shaped the doom more, then
welded shut the one of the seems before doing some grinding.

August 2nd 5:30-7:00

Welded the other three seems of the doom. Grinded off the excess metal, filled in any mistakes.
Shaped the rim a bit more.

August 9th 5:30-6:50

We used clamps to hold the sprange to the doom, to figure out the position for the rim. We taked
on the front half of the rim, then backed the back part of the rim to that. Welded the rim onto it
fully. Drilled breaths into the sprange.

August 14th 5:50-7:30

We welded the two parts of the rims together, spent the rest of the time grinding off the extra
filler metal.

August 17th 6:00-7:30

We spent the day repairing any holes or faults in the dome and grinding off all the access filler
metal.

August 21st 5:50-7:40

We accidentally created a large hole in the dome and spent the next few days trying to close it.

August 22nd 6:10-8:00

We continued to try to close the whole in the dome. Continued to grind

August 25th 5:40-7:50

We finally fixed the whole.Continued to fix small faults in the rest of the dome. Grinded off
access metal.

September 6th 6:00-7:30

Grinding out any faults in the dome. Speculated on where and how to attach the Sprange.

September 20th 5:30- 7:00

We Speculated on where to attach the Sprange to the dome, Tak and then weld the sprange to the
dome. We then started taking straps onto the helmet as reinforcements.

November 16th 6:00-8:40

We spent the shop day better welding and grinding the dome reinforcements

April 30th 7:16- 8:12

I was planning on this being the last shop day to finish the helmet, but was unable do to a
communication error, so I decided to sand my helmet and get it more ready for the finish.

May 3rd 8:15-9:15

Last shop day, I welded any faults that remained present, then later grinded the welds down. I
rounded the edges of the sprange by grinding the sharp edges off.

May 7th 7:00- 7:30

Paint the helmet so it doesn't rust.
