Activity 1: Sight Reading

Objective:

 Students will sight read Galop by Dmitri Shostakovich.

 Students will analyze a recording of Galop, discussing with peers how articulations

should be played, difficult parts of the piece, and anything else they find

interesting/challenging.

 Students will perform the C Natural Minor, A Harmonic Minor, and F Major scales

arpeggiation.

Purpose:

 This piece is difficult and students should be able to identify what parts they can and

cannot play at the very beginning of the concert block. I believe that the best way to

define how to play things is by discussing it as an ensemble then making a decision. The

decision can be changed later but every musician needs to define the difficult passages of

a piece.

Lesson:

 Sight Read Galop, stopping and starting when necessary.

 Play the recording of the US Air Force playing Galop

o Ask students to listen for articulations, difficult passages,

 Think, Pair, Share

o Think about the articulation, difficult passages, and anything else you found

interesting and tell your neighbor. (Pause for them to talk)

o What did some of your neighbors say?

 Students respond saying anything that can be guided by the teacher to

reach an answer or their answers can be left alone.

 Things to be brought up:

 What were there a lot of in your parts? (staccatos)

 Were there a lot of dynamics? (sometimes)

 Did everyone get a chance to have the melody (yes)

 What is it that you will need to practice?

 Give them 2 minutes to practice the parts they need to

 Play Galop again starting and stopping when necessary.

 The practice assignment.

o Record C Minor, A Harmonic Minor, and F Major scales with their

arpeggiations, and submit them to Canvas by [1 week time from this lesson]

Assessment:

 Think, pair, share will be informally assessed. The teacher will walk around and see that

all students are participating, offering suggestions to what they should be talking about.
