1. SCOPE
This standard shall specify the minimum requirements for the design, selection,
fabrication and installation of pipe supports associated with the bulk piping scope
for PROJECT LION PHASE 2 SINGAPORE.
2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
3. DESIGN BASIS
3.1 The following codes and specifications have been used in the design and drawing
of these standards.
• British Standard BS 5950: Part 1: The use of Structural Steel in Buildings
• British Standard BS 3974: Part 1&2: Pipe Supports
• British Standard BS 499: Part 2: Welding Terms and Symbols
3.2 Calculations have been based upon the use of steel in accordance with British
Standard BS EN 10 025 Grade 430A (S.275). Steel of equal properties may be
used.
3.3 Friction forces on the support, induced by movement of the supported pipe, have
been calculated on the basis of a friction coefficient.
• Steel to Steel = 0.3
• PTFE on PTFE or polished Stainless Steel = 0.1
• Steel on Concrete = 0.6
3.4 All welds to be continuous 6mm (leg length) unless stated otherwise. Stitch

DSN: 5976
3.5 Bolting shall be Grade 8.8 in accordance with BS 4190. Bolts are to be hot spun
galvanised supplied complete with matching washer, nut & locking nut.
3.6 The standard pipe supports contained within this document are of welded
construction. Generally, they can be utilised if required in their entirety for a
bolted installation, in which case the requirement shall be added to the relevant
contract documentation.
3.7 The standard pipe supports contained within this standard are required to include
a rubbing bar arrangements on horizontal bearing surfaces to minimise corrosion.
This also includes all horizontal points of support on new and existing structures.
3.8 The standard anti corrosion protection for pipe supports shall be in accordance
with SP 93 1 for Specific Coating Specification.
This section of the standard is aimed primarily at the Pipe Designer responsible
for the design and selection of pipe supports.
Selection Guidelines
4.1.1 The overriding philosophy in pipe support selection is the maximisation of standard
supports, hence minimising the requirement for special pipe supports (SPSs).
Where special pipe supports are used they shall be designed where possible
using the standard steel sections listed in attachment 5. Avoid generating a
special pipe support drawing where it is possible to use a standard support with
notes (e.g.: “weld shoe on top of pipe”).
4.1.2 Where standard supports are used for pipe sizes above the limits stated, a design
check shall be undertaken as part of selection. The addition of the larger pipe size
written after the support type thus, PS 23B (12" NPS), shall be taken as an
indication that this check has been undertaken.
4.1.3 Similarly, where standard supports specify the use of larger or smaller sections
than those listed in the standards a design check shall be undertaken. The
addition of the required steel section written after the support type, e.g. PS 1 (203
x 133 UB30) shall be taken as an indication that this check has been undertaken.
4.1.4 Standard support details making reference to other attachments, to both pipe and
steelwork include information on safe loads. These loads are based on the
components specified and not the strength or rigidity of the supported pipe,
supporting steel or structural base, which shall all be assessed and checked
separately.

4.2.2 Sloping lines shall be supported such that free draining can be achieved (as noted
within Typical Piping Details and Standards (0470 8230 SP 00 0001).
4.2.3 The standard pipe spans for carbon steel and other metallic piping systems are
shown in attachments 1 and 2. These indicate the maximum straight length of pipe
allowed between supports. This is based on methods for calculating the maximum
pipe span limited by stress or deflection (either continuous beam or single span),
whichever gives the lesser span.
4.2.4 Pipe spans have been based on pipes subject to a Uniform Distributed Load
(UDL). Maximum spans are indicated for lines empty and full either insulated or
un insulated. Un insulated lines have been assessed for indentation from rubbing
bars (point contact). Reinforcement pads are specified where required to prevent
localised overstressing of the pipe wall and to maintain the calculated pipe spans.
4.2.5 Pipe spans for non metallic piping are to be in accordance with manufacturer
recommendations.
4.2.6 Maximum guide spacing for straight pipe runs is shown within Attachment 3.
4.3.1 Supports for all CS piping in any service temperature and for alloy piping in
intermittent service temperature less than 250 °F (121°C) shall be constructed of I
and H beam sections of CS material. All structure steel shall be open structural
shape such as angle, channel, I and H beam. Closed structural shapes such as
tubes, pipes and box members are not permitted.
4.3.4 All horizontal un insulated piping shall rest on rubbing bars. Vertical piping shall be
isolated from the support structure.
4.4.2 Pipe reinforcing at the location or point of line support in horizontal pipe runs shall
be as per Attachment 4.
4.4.3 Sloping lines shall be supported using standard shoes trimmed to suit (down to a
minimum of 50mm, if insulation thickness allows) or shimmed to suit for smaller
make up dimensions. Drawings shall be marked ‘TRIM TO SUIT’ or ‘SHIM TO
SUIT’ as necessary.
4.4.4 The top of concrete plinths are to be a minimum of 150 mm above finished grade
or high point of paving.
4.4.5 A fireproofed catch beam shall be installed beneath piping containing flammable
material where such piping is hung by rods or spring type supports from a fire
proofed pipe crossbeam.
4.4.6 Hanger rod supports shall be of sufficient length to enable the swing caused by
the pipe horizontal movement from resulting in an undesired vertical displacement.
The maximum angle from vertical shall be +2.5o (Total 5o).Maximum advisable
length of hanger rod < 2.0 M.
4.4.7 For acid tiled areas suspended or cantilevered supports should be used wherever
possible. Floor mounted supports shall be minimised by grouping and using
common support plinths. Plinths shall be of sufficient height to allow tiling and
shall be positioned such that they do not impede draining. Materials for the pipe
support base shall be determined for the particular project application.
4.4.8 Supports shown in the Support Standards (attachment 7) are fabricated from
structural grade carbon steel which is non impact tested and becomes brittle at
low temperatures. Supports bolted directly to piping should not be used on lines
with a minimum design temperature of less than 0oC without use of an isolating
barrier equivalent to Tico clip strip (or equivalent) (SX 99). Use ‘cold supports’ for
cryogenic lines.

5.2.4 The numbering system for special pipe supports (SPS’s) and spring supports (SH)
will be given as 0470 SPS YYYY and 0470 SH YYYY respectively, Where YYYY
is the sequence number (0 to 200 for Ashless and above 201for ZDDP) within the
relevant schedules.
6. SCOPE OF SUPPLY
6.1 Basis
6.1.1 The basis of this standard is that pipe supports will be on a supply, fabricate and
erect sub contract, either by the main piping fabricator or possibly as part of a
specialist pipe support supplier, hereafter referred to as ‘the contractor’.
6.1.2 FW will design or specify pipe support components of all piping used within these
standards. Where SPS’s are required, these will be separately detailed and
numbered.
6.2 Material
6.2.1 To aid the contractor and to reduce material wastage, principle dimensions will be
indicated against the support type on the relevant piping drawing.
The contractor shall be responsible for determining the actual dimensions prior to
the installation of each support and to adjust the applicable dimensions to ensure
that each support is satisfactorily installed. After correct installation, it is also the
contractor’s responsibility to trim back the evidence of any excess material.
6.2.2 The Contractor(s) shall keep detailed reconcilable accounts of all pipe support
material for review by FW.
6.2.3 The Contractor shall be responsible for a pipe support MTO and hence any
shortage or excess in pipe support material.

DSN: 5976
6.3.1 The pipe supports generally use a selection of British Standard steel sections as
listed in attachment 5. If these sections are not available, the contractor shall
propose to FW a suitable alternative for approval.
6.4.1 The Contractor shall be responsible for developing an identification system that
ensures the traceability of pipe supports within the fabrication yard. Similarly, the
Contractor shall be responsible for the identification of supports fabricated for on
site erection.
6.4.2 The pipe support identification shall be stamped and painted on the completed
support together with (where applicable) the principle dimensions to which the
support was fabricated.
6.4.3 Pipe shoes are interchangeable, hence the unique identification may be omitted,
provided the shoe is clearly painted and stamped with its type and (where
applicable) size.
7. INSTALLATION
7.1 Pipe supports will be generally of welded construction. The welded area must be
thoroughly cleaned and treated in accordance with SP 93 1 Paint and Coatings
Specification for Lion project.
7.2 A final bolted installation shall be used in designated Hazardous areas or where
deemed prudent. The structural steel will be site drilled by the contractor for this
purpose and made good in accordance with SP 93 1 Paint and Coatings
Specification for Lion project. The Contractor shall size, select and supply suitable
nuts, bolts, washers, locknuts and also decide suitable back marks, centres and
drill the affected structure to suit.
7.3 Care must be taken to ensure that ‘U’ Bolts are tightened on to the pipe only
where it is required to anchor the line against all movements (eg to support
vertical piping). Elsewhere, ‘U’ bolts should be adjusted to allow axial movement
of the pipe.

8.1 General
8.1.1 Pipe supports which are particularly appropriate to small bore piping are those
shown as PS 105 Small Bore Pipe Supports 1 1/2” NPS and below. PS105 shall
be used in conjunction with shoes where required.
8.1.2 Also the following guidelines have been included to assist the designer (or the
contractor) in undertaking this scope. Failure to do so may cause damage, not
only to the support, but also to the pipe, vessel or other equipment to which it is
attached.
Secondary pipe support members (small lateral pipe racks, independent stanchions,
individual T columns, columns with brackets etc.) supporting pipes carrying
Flammable, Combustible and Toxic materials need to be fireproofed when these lines
are located within the fire protection zone (FPZ) and line size is greater than 3” to
satisfy Singapore Fire Safety Guidelines.
For Afton Phase 2 project, fluid codes identified based on above criteria are ADP,
PBS, AP, GZ, JZ, AD, IPA, AAL, EH, ISB, MPL, HSG, THA and SHS. Additionally,
secondary pipe support members of fire water distribution headers, sub headers
supplying more than one facility to be fire proofed.
Fireproofing requirement for pipe supports of these lines are marked on piping
isometric drawing as ‘FIREPROOF’.
• Extent of fire proofing requirement within FPZ applied to pipe supports shall be
governed by
• Fireproofing of columns and cross beam members shall extend up to the support
level of the piping
• Direct attachments to the pipes such as shoes need not be fireproofed. Fireproofing
shall be installed in a manner that it would not impede thermal displacement of
piping.
Spray Applied Fire Resistive material applied by spray and/or trowel shall be selected
for fireproof of secondary pipe support members. High density cementitious material
with min avg density of 55 pcf with min individual value of 50 pcf shall be applied in
one or more coats to steel, mesh and lath surfaces. Reinforcing mesh/ Galvanized
expanded steel lath secured to column or beam by bending tight around flanges a min
of 1 1/2” toward web of column/ beam.
Minimum thickness of the fireproofing shall be 1 1/8” (29 mm) based on a 2 hr fire
resistance rating according to UL 1709.
Fire proofing material shall be Pyrocrete 241 of Carboline or approved equivalent. Fire
proofing material supplier shall submit the Fire test result for the required thickness to
meet 2 hr fire rating and UL1709 test certificate (performed by certified independent
3rd party laboratory) for approval.
