i. Standards and multicultural objective:

Multicultural Standard- SWBAT relate and compute different multicultural backgrounds writing
a narrative and share a short skit.
Students will learn and become more aware in racism and how to prevent it, and what to do it if
happens.

CCSD Standard for Sixth Graders- SWBAT to assemble a narrative to develop real or imagined
experiences.

Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique,
relevant descriptive details, and well structured event sequences.
1. Engage and orient the reader by establishing a context and introducing a narrator and/or
characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally and logically.
2. Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, and description, to develop
experiences, events, and/or characters
3. Use a variety of transition words, phrases, and clauses to convey sequence and signal
shifts from one time frame or setting to another..
4. Use precise words and phrases, relevant descriptive details, and sensory language to
convey experiences and events.
5. Provide a conclusion that follows from the narrated experiences or events.

In addition to linguistic intelligence, this lesson plan also uses spatial and bodily kinesthetic
intelligence.

B) Materials needed- Any props used in short skits, pencil, and paper.

C) Procedures

Interesting hook: Have you or anyone you know been treated differently because of your skin
color?

DAY 1:
10 mins: Introduce what we are going to be doing and discuss racism and discrimination. Ask
students if they know what it is and if they have ever seen it. To make it age appropriate and
learn what key points to hit look at the following link: http://www.parenting.com/article/5-tips-
for-talking-about-racism-with-kids
Examples: “Don't be afraid to bring it up, Most importantly, be a role model”

15 mins: Show them videos to help them understand racism: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

10 mins: After watching both clips have the class reflect on the videos. Ask what they thought of
the video and what was going on in both. Ask questions such as; Where does racism come from?
What should have the pin done in that situation? In the CNN video why did they show different
photos? Have class discussion talking about what the students in the clip and students in real life
can do to prevent racism and how to handle racism.

15 mins: Talk about the essay and skit’s expectations and answer any questions.
Students are going to write a narrative about a time a character experienced racism or
discrimination. The conclusion of the paragraph should include a solution or what the character
can to do to prevent or avoid racism. Essay should be at least 1 page long and have no bigger
font than 16. Narrative needs to have and intro, at least one body paragraph and a conclusion.
Make sure narrative answers Who, When, Where, and Why. The skit will be performed the
following class period and can only be a maximum of 2 minutes long a minimum of 1. The skit
is going to be a representation of the narrative. Students can have as many classmates as they
need in their skit, but each student is going to need to perform their own narrative. Students must
write the paper and bring it into class the following day.

10 mins: For the last 10 minutes of class, students will need to brainstorm and pre-write what
they want to write on their papers.

D) Closure

DAY 2:
60 mins: Students perform short skits for 10% of their grade of their overall paper. Students who
miss class will have to perform the following day and if the student refuses to perform they will
get an automatic F. While students are performing skits, have students will have a piece of paper,
and will be taking notes on what they are noticing and learning about racism. Have students turn
in their notes at the end of class for participation points.
E) Assessment
(CCSD Writing standards on separate sheet of paper.)
The multicultural aspect will be graded on if students have a clear understand what racism is and
why it is wrong and a solution they have for it.
