Yes. I do agree with the study, especially the use of guided play in teaching the children
about the basic properties of shapes namely: triangles, rectangles, pentagons, and hexagons, it
must be emphasized that the teachers become a collaborative partner who would create a
flexible and interest-driven experiences which will then encourage the children’s natural
curiosity, active engagement and “sense-making” processes. However it is also important that
we include other familiar shapes so we can expose them to several shapes and even further
widen their knowledge.
This kind of learning system is actually applicable in LCCC, since the teachers (as
observed) show that they work hand in hand with the children as they try to teach them the
basic principles about letters, colors and shapes. It would be a good idea if the teachers would
scaffold the children’s learning as early as toddler stage. This can be done through co-playing
with the children and creating games or activities with well-planned curricular materials.
To conclude, I believe that this kind of learning system is applicable in the Philippines since
our teachers are well trained and are able to come up with very creative learning styles and
learning materials for their students. However it is also important that we orient them first with
the basic principles of how this kind of learning method is done. Hence; they would fully
understand the goals and objectives of this learning method and how it could be of great help
for the students. In status quo, we are facing a growing national concern for improving
education since many children now a days lack key academic competencies prior to school
entry particularly in the area of mathematics, this then will be of great help in improving our
children as young as their age, as we try to expose them to rich curricular content.
