Lesson Topic: Heat

This lesson was the introduction to heat. The students were introduced to a KWL
chart then sent to their seats to create a cover page in their science journal about heat
including texts and illustrations. This went well and is a strategy the teacher uses at the
beginning of every science unit. Students were able to draw and/or write based on their
ability and prior scientific knowledge. Most students drew pictures of fire and
volcanoes. One student wrote the words: convection, radiation, and conduction. I was
able to observe that he had more advanced knowledge on this topic. The teacher played
a video on heat that covered specific scientific vocabulary. Then, they cut and pasted
heat vocabulary with definitions to their science journal. The teacher did not start with
any kind of engagement activity. She just began the lesson with a discussion. From my
observation, she only completed the explain section of the 5Es of science.

This lesson was an introduction, and they were limited on time due to lunch so the
only objective was introducing the science vocabulary on heat. Students were able to
add what they knew and wanted to know to the KWL chart.

This was a third grade class, and I teach first grade. During the brief introductory
lesson, the only alignment I identified is they learn about a type of energy too. First
grade learns about light and sound. I liked they method she used of creating a cover
page in their science journal. It was like a title page where they wrote and drew about
heat. The teacher said they add science experiments, writings, and vocabulary behind
the cover page. I later used this strategy in my own classroom.

Overall, the purpose of lesson was met. The teacher was introducing heat. I did
feel like the lesson lacked engagement and felt she should be training in the 5E format.
