English as an Additional Language (EAL) F3 Learning Letter

Over the next term, we will be closely following class topics in addition to looking at
some specific areas that will increase your child’s ability to access the mainstream
class curriculum. We will focus on:

 Phonics: blending 3 sounds together (e.g. a-n-t, ant); learning digraphs (e.g.
sh, ch); practising sight ‘red’ words (e.g. I, you, the, my, to, said)
 Recognising prepositions of place (e.g. on, under, in, in front of, behind,
between)
 Talking about yesterday, today and tomorrow
 Using rhyming words and stories (cat, mat / fun, sun)
 Talk-4-Writing: This is the Bear
 Maths: Doubling and halving numbers
 F3 Fairytale Show: practising the words and actions
 Regular use of songs and stories to broaden vocabulary and fluency
 Learning about different cultures and places during International week.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) Year 1 Tier 1 Learning Letter

Over the next term, we will be closely following class topics in addition to looking at
some specific areas that will increase your child’s ability to access the mainstream
class curriculum. More specifically, we will focus on:

 Consolidating our phonics knowledge and applying the sounds we have learnt
to our writing and reading consistently.
 Learning about buildings and structures including related vocabulary.
 Exploring fiction texts including ‘Handa’s Surprise’ which will include retelling
the story, innovating the story and also examining different features of fiction
texts in order to use them in our own writing.
 Continuing to learn and use past tense verbs.
 Writing independently employing our phonics strategies and with the use of
capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
 Learning the features of a recount text and writing a recount of factual events.
 Learning about different cultures and places during and in the lead up to
International week.
 Learning set phrases, question and answer forms that will help with general
communication in and out of the class.
 Using articles appropriately in speaking and writing.
 Using plurals consistently and appropriately in speaking and writing.
 Maths language; including fractions, multiplication and division.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) Year 1 Tier 2 & 3 Learning Letter

During the next term, we will be following the mainstream class curriculum and also
looking at some specific areas to help broaden your child's vocabulary knowledge
and expand their ability to communicate in English. We will focus on:

 Consolidating our phonics knowledge and applying the sounds we have learnt
to our writing and reading consistently.
 Learning about buildings and structures including related vocabulary.
 Exploring fiction texts including ‘Handa’s Surprise’ which will include retelling
and innovating the story, and also examining different features of fiction texts
in order to use them in our own writing.
 Continuing to learn and use a range of appropriate regular and irregular past
tense verbs in writing and speaking.
 Writing independently employing our phonics strategies and with the use of
capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
 Learning the features of a recount text and writing a recount of factual events.
 Learning about different cultures and places during and in the lead up to
International week.
 Learning set phrases, question and answer forms that will help with general
communication in and out of the classroom.
 Using articles appropriately in speaking and writing.

 Developing our written letter formation to make our writing neat and tidy.
 Maths language; including fractions, multiplication and division.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) Year 2 Learning Letter

This term, we will be following the mainstream class curriculum to look at some
specific areas to help your child progress in English. We will be focussing on

Tier 1:
 Introducing noun phrases and begin to write noun phrases independently
 Expand sentences with more information using where, how, when and why.
 Using conjunctions to expand sentences
 Correctly using prepositions
 Developing comprehension skills when reading
 Improving speaking fluency through role plays and language games
 Understanding and using vocabulary used to describe animal habitats.

Tier 2 and 3:
 Learning and using new vocabulary from the story: The Magic Finger
 Using adverbs in a sentence
 Using adjectives for emotions and feelings
 Using a variety of speech verbs
 Consolidating knowledge of past tense verbs

 Compound and complex sentences


 Developing range of irregular verbs in the Past Simple tense
 Adjectives ending in -ed and -ing e.g. excited/exciting
 Writing dialogue with accurate punctuation
 Emotive language for persuasion
 Vocabulary relating to rainforests (IPC) and plants (Science)

English as an Additional Language (EAL) Year 4 Learning Letter

This term, we will be following the mainstream class curriculum to look at some specific
areas to help your child progress in English. We will be focussing on:

Tier 1

 Developing range of verbs


 Simple and compound sentences
 Present and Past Simple tenses
 Extending sentences in speaking and writing using question words (who,
what, where, when, why and how)
 Identifying fact and opinion
 Identifying features of information texts and applying them to writing

Tiers 2 and 3

 Recognise the difference between facts and opinion


 Label the features of an information text
 Past Continuous (she was swimming)
 Present Perfect (she has swum)
 Subject Verb agreement (they are, they were, I am)
 Possessive nouns (boy, boy’s, boys’)
 Possessive adjectives (his, her, my)

This term, we will be following the mainstream class curriculum to look at some
specific areas to help your child progress in English. We will be focussing on:

Journey Narratives
 Engaging the reader
 Conveying emotion through actions (‘showing not telling’ techniques)
 Developing rich vocabulary for conveying action and emotion
 Integrating dialogue into narratives using correct punctuation
Non-Chronological Reports
 Reading and learning about the recent history of South Africa
 Choosing an appropriate topic to engage the reader
 Expand knowledge of the topic by asking relevant questions
 Wider reading online and in books for to research the topic
 Selecting an appropriate form (e.g. report or presentation)
Writing and Grammar
 Planning for writing fiction and non-fiction
 Evaluating and editing writing for effectiveness and accuracy
 Consistently and accurately using past tenses
 Subject-verb agreement
 Varying sentence structure
 Paragraphing in fiction and non-fiction – understanding when to begin a new
paragraph and how to link ideas within and across paragraphs

This term, we will be following the mainstream class curriculum to look at some
specific areas to help your child progress in English. We will be focussing on:

Non-linear Stories
 Narratives tenses – past simple & past continuous
 Types of sentences and their effect on writing – simple, compound and
complex
 Time connectives review

Paragraphing in fiction and non- fiction – when to change paragraphs and why.
Point, Evidence, Analyse paragraphing.

Figurative Language – why writers use these literary devices; and their impact on
the reader.
 Similes
 Metaphors
 Personification
 Alliteration
 Onomatopoeia

Reading Comprehension – developing inference and deduction
