CHILD WELFARE in INDIA: Role of International, Government , Non-Government

Organizations and private companies

To begin with there are international and Government organizations like
 UNICEF-for the past 70 years, working with GoI helping children realize their dreams
and give them best start in their life. Commited to 1)prevent neonnatal death 2)child
survival growth and development3)Protective and learning environment4)adolescence
empowerment5)Policy Influencing..etc#Early moments matter,#StaysafeOnline..the
recent projects.
 CARE has been working in India for over 65 years, focusing on alleviating poverty and
social exclusion. CARE India’s Girl Education Programme, MP nutrition Project etc
 RED CROSS INDIA-Child Welfare schemes of National Headquarters were started in
1954 to extend Maternal and Child Development activities for the Weaker Section of the
Community. The welfare activities are being continued through various Hospitals, Sub
Centres and Bal Vikas Kendras.
 In 1996, CHILDLINE India Foundation (CIF) launched CHILDLINE, the country's first
toll-free tele-helpline for street children in distress.

There is around 166+ NGOs in India working for children's rights and welfare.
Child Rights and You (CRY) For nearly 4 decades, CRY and its 200 partner NGOs have
worked with parents and communities across 23 states to ensure sustainable change in the life of
over 2 million underprivileged children Smile Foundation directly benefits over 600,000
children and their families every year, through more than 250 live welfare projects on education,
healthcare, livelihood and women empowerment, in over 950 remote villages and slums across
25 states of India. Save the Children has run elaborate campaigns such as ‘action/2015’ and
‘Every Last Child’ with an aim to make child rights important in India's collective psyche. And
many others..
I had the opportunity to observe closely and volunteer for the welfare activities of Aware
,Chennai based NGO for women and child welfare. They are involved in
 Model Community for Chemmenchery Proect-Weekend classes/Summer camps/Dhan
Utsav/Painting schools/Surveys-Competitions culturals etc
 Save the Smiles-Addressing Child sexual abuse prevention
Volunteers include students, working professionals and others.India is the first country in the
world to enshrine corporate giving into law. Following a change in company law in April 2014,
businesses with annual revenues of more than 10bn rupees (£105m) must give away 2% of their
net profit to charity. Areas they can invest this money in include education, poverty, gender
equality and hunger. And many private companies have invested in child welfare too.
