REVIEW: Motion and Graphing Acceleration

1. Define the following, if there is a formula, write the formula and the units that it is measured in.
Speed - the magnitude of its velocity (the rate of change of its position)
Velocity - the rate of change of position with respect to a frame of reference and is a function of time.
Distance - refers to "how much ground an object has covered" during its motion.
Displacement - refers to "how far out of place an object is"; it is the object's overall change in position
Acceleration - the rate of change of velocity of an object with respect to time

2. What is most likely being measured in the diagram above?

Velocity

3. In the morning, you leave home and walk 2 km to a friend’s house. At noon, you walk another 2 km back to your
house. Your mom greets you and you get in her car. You travel to the mall, which is 22 km away. What is the
total distance you have traveled so far today? 26 km

4. Which of the following cars has a higher average speed? D. 70 km/hr

a. a car that travelled 160 km in 4 hrs
b. a car that travelled 80 km in 4 hrs
c. a car that travelled 250 km in 5 hrs
d. a car that travelled 350 km in 5 hrs

5. An ant crawled 10 cm in 2 seconds. What was the ant’s speed in centimeters per second? 5 cm/s

6. In the diagram above, if all 3 cars are traveling at the same velocity, how does acceleration occur? Acceleration
would occur by increasing the cars speed in a given amount time.
7. Turning/placement on the track affects acceleration.

8. What is happening during each segment of the graph?

a. 1. Positive velocity
b. 2. Negative velocity
c. 3. Positive velocity
d. 4. Zero velocity

9. What was the average speed during each segment?

a. 1. 2 m/s
b. 2. (40-100)/ (70-50) = -60/20 = -30 m/s
c. 3. (160-40)/(100-70) = 120/30 = 40 m/s
d. 4. 0 m/s

11. What is happening in the graph above? Increasing acceleration, decreasing acceleration, then increasing
acceleration again
12. Using the graph above, what is the object’s acceleration between 4 and 5 seconds? (11-12)/(5-4) = -1/1 = -1 m/s2

13. Using the graph above, what is happening between seconds 2 and 3? Positive acceleration

14. A car is moving 100.0 m/s and slow down to 75.0 m/s in 5.0 seconds, what is the rate of acceleration? -5 m/s2

16. A cheetah is trying to chase down his prey, he has to run 180 meters before he catches his prey, it takes the cheetah
5 seconds to catch the prey. What is the average velocity of the cheetah during this chase? 36 m/s

17. A car traveling initially at 12.0 m/s accelerates to velocity of 22.0 m/s in 5.0 s. What is the average acceleration of
the car? 2 m/s2

for his entire flight. How far did he travel? 1000 meters
