LIKE + GERUND

• We often use gerunds after the verbs.


• Love, like,don’t mind, dislike, don’t like, hate, enjoy and
prefer.
• We use the base form of the verb + ing to form gerunds.

Form

A gerund is the base form of a verb + -ing.


Gerunds can be used as nouns.

Gerunds as Subjects

A gerund can be the subject of a sentence. It is


always singular. Use a third-person singular verb
after a gerund.

Don’t confuse gerunds with the


present progressive verb form.

Definition

• An infinitive is the word “to” plus the base form of a


verb.
• It often functions as a noun, as either a subject or a
direct object.
• It can also function as an adjective or adverb.
• It is not a preposition.

Examples:

• I wanted to run out the door when the teacher


announced a pop quiz.
• I tried to think of an excuse, but my mind drew a blank
and so I was forced to baby-sit for my bratty cousin.

Non-Example

• I went to the store with my two year old brother,


Jake.

• The above examples are not infinitives. “To the


store” is a prepositional phrase. “two” is not “to.”

• Infinitives in the subject position

To live in the United States is my dream

Gerunds often follow verbs that indicate that


an action is happening or has happened.

The action expressed by the verb comes at


the same time or after the action expressed
by the gerund.

We enjoy going to concerts.


(you can only enjoy things you are doing or
have done –
not things you haven’t done yet.)

Infinitives often follow verbs that indicate that


an action will or could happen.

The action expressed by the verb comes


before the action expressed by the infinitive.

We hope to go to the concert.


(You can hope for things that could happen
not things that have already happened)
