Essential Question: Can robots be nurses?

Working Thesis: No but can they help with surgeries?

Refined Thesis: Robots can help with surgeries, but can they fix the nursing shortage?

Outstanding healthcare relies on personal touch, diagnose, and timely treatment. Advancements

in automation in front line medicine are very likely to continue, robots and advanced technology

has a lot to offer. California’s InHealthTouch developed a mobile robot called the RP-7 that has a

screen and controlled by a remote from a different location so the doctor can communicate with a

patient from far away. In many villages there are little to no doctors at all so this will provide a

easy access for the villagers to doctors. Hopefully in the future, you will be able to talk to several

doctors through the RP-7. Other robotic advancements are happening with surgery for the brain.

Other robotic advancements are happening in brain surgery. In Canada there was a Neuro Arm

launched, which is a robot specifically designed for neurosurgery. It allows the surgeon to

operate remotely on the patient's brain while accessing a near real time MRI feed. This article

will help me write my paper because it explains how robots in the medical field are expanding

and how doctors are trying to make easier access to

Some robots can advocate for surgical nurses but they will never be able to replace a

nurse. The robot does not have enough sympathy and senses to be able to give the patient

bedside manner or make them truly feel better. Nurses need to be able to indicate if a patient is

going through any trouble during surgery or any trouble. Some robots may eventually do some

tasks now done by scrub nurses, such as handing surgeons instruments but robots can not and

will not advocate for patients and be able to correct the doctor if they are not doing something

they are supposed to. The role of nursing is often misunderstood and not focused on because

there are no life saving examples in the media and because nurses do not go around bragging

about saving a life or telling a mother her baby will not live. The public needs to understand what

nurses do because they are very important to society and life. This article will help me write my

paper because it shows how important nurses are to our lifestyle and how robots will never be

able to replace a nurse.

There is a nursing shortage in this country and it does not look like it is getting any better.

Dr. Michael R. from the Columbia-Presbyterian Center in Manhattan is hoping an automated arm

that hands the doctor instruments will replace nurses. Hospitals all around the country are going

through nursing shortages. The nurses working in these hospitals are also going through fatigue

on long shifts and mandatory overtime, a lack of experienced staff, and not enough time to

monitor patients has lead to poor medical results and higher death rates for patients. In 2001,

there was a survey by the American Nurses Association and it shows a majority of nurses say

they believe that they can not do their jobs as well in their current working conditions.

This survey found that 75 percent of nurses said the quality of nursing care at their medical

centers had declined in the last two years. More than 40 percent said they would not feel

comfortable having a family member cared for or seen in their hospitals. Many reports and

articles have recommended hospitals to improve their working conditions for nurses.

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System in South Carolina have actually started an online

auction that allows nurses to bid on extra shifts, starting at $40 an hour. They bid down the wage

by 50 cents a bid; the lowest bidder wins the shift. The Cleveland Clinic Foundation has also

started giving better shifts to attract more nurses, called “the mom shift”, this shift is from 9 a.m.

to 2 p.m. and this program has already attracted 40 new nurses. Many hospitals have started to

addreseasy problems by ending mandatory overtime, involving nurses in making decisions,

listening to their concerns and reducing paper and nonclinical work. This article will help me

are trying to do whatever they can to help.
