Overview of the lesson:
Iman planned and taught a math/science lesson about tally marks. She introduced the idea by
showing images which she tallied on the board, asking students to participate by making the tally
marks. Then she handed out differentiated activity materials and explained what to do, circulating to
explain more and help students complete the task. Most students were on task and learning. At the
end of the activity, she collected all the papers and showed the class what the students had done.
Then she showed a video about tally marks, stopping at important points to help children understand
tally marks and bar graphs. Then she gave out survey question for each group to convert the tally
marks into a number.

Areas for development:

1. Choral work on key vocabulary – ask all students to say the target vocabulary.
2. Transition to activity. It takes a long time for you to hand out the materials. It would be faster to
put everything in one package and ask the group leader to come and collect it. Similarly, it took a
long time to stop the activity and collect the materials. Give the responsibility to the students to
clean up – appoint a group leader who gets extra points for keeping the materials together,
collecting the papers and bringing them to you.
3. teacher centeredness. Make your class more student centered– try to include the whole class
more.
- Ask students to turn and talk – say what you learned about tally to your friend,
- ask students to present their own work at the end of the activity
- ask all students to say the key words.
- ask all students to make the tally marks for the dinosaurs on white boards or paper.
- take a survey of the whole class and put it on a poster – How many students have white shoes ,
black shoes, pink shoes, blue shoes. Tally up the results
