Lesson English - Prepositions Student Ms. Mahra
unit/page teacher
- Understand that print differs from pictures by using one-to-one correspondence when
reading.
- Understand that print and pictures convey meaning by telling a story from a text or a
picture.
For my first lesson, I taught English – Preposition and planned a normal lesson addressing all
student levels. The lesson was for Ms. Roopas KG2B students, the lesson took place in Sharjah
International Private School on a Sunday morning. When I reached the classroom, the substitute
teacher informed me that Ms. Roopa won’t be attending for a few days and was on a personal
leave, which honestly left me dumbstruck. For my first week of TP I spent it at another school
then I was transferred to SIPS and only spent three days with Ms. Roopa’s students and they
barely knew me let alone that this was my first lesson. Before starting the lesson, I discussed it
with the substitute teacher and filled her in about my teacher practice. I wanted students to get a
deeper insight to what prepositions is and understand that print and pictures convey meaning
from a text. Ms. Aisha and I collaborated in planning this lesson, we thought that we could
begin by presenting the prepositional phrases before playing a game that they’re familiar with. I
choose 5 students to come up and hold the flash cards, each flashcard contains the 5 prepositions
along with a picture) then I called 3-5 students, and had them stand further. The student would
wait for me to give instructions before making any move, I will say “The ball is under the table”
and the students will hop towards the student holding the Under flashcard. The activity went on
for a while before handing out worksheets, we wanted to see how the students will perform when
given a worksheet and hands-on activities. Since they weren’t used to having me as a teacher,
they listened and followed instructions well. There was one student though, Rodina, who sought
attention in various ways: from scribbling on her paper, cutting it, crumbling it, and eventually
disposing it. After giving her what she wants and having a nice talk with her, she slowly began
accepting me. I gave her another chance, and she behaved well and finished her work and I told
her that I would definitely share with Ms. Roopa regarding her good performance.
I think the student responded the way they did was because aside from Ms. Roopa being absent, I
was someone they barely knew who just entered the classroom and began teaching them. I
began by greeting them and discussing the lesson before playing the songs and PowerPoint. I
think I engaged the students well by playing the song and with every picture I would pause it and
I believe that my lesson did meet my teaching goals but I wasn’t going to assume anything yet
until my next lesson where I will be giving them a revision. I might enhance the students
learning of this lesson in the future by bringing materials and placing it at random places and ask
the students to find it and tell me it’s prepositional place. Play has an important role in creative
learning and many benefits, through play children learn more about team work, peer discussions,
problem solving, and enhance their imagination at such a young age. There are parents out there
who don’t know just how important play-based learning is, and as teachers it is our job to share
this information.
