Overall aim and context of the lesson

The Math lesson was about addition, addition is putting or joining numbers or objects together. The
lesson helps the students to develop counting and adding ability, which also develops their thinking.
My aim was to let students identify the meaning of addition, know the addition sign, learn to count
and adding numbers or objects.

SWC Lesson Reflection

Select (S):
The lesson was about identifying addition and develop adding skills. I was addressing different
standards, the low, the high, the medium abilities students, pair work and group work. LA students
had to count and add pictures up to 10 and they did well, few students take longer time than the others,
MA students had to add two numbers up to 10, this task was challenging for MA students they had
taken longer time doing it which is good, because they were trying different strategies to add numbers
together, using their fingers, sticks, and drawing. HA students had to count and choose the right
addition picture to the questions/ equations given, when they finish I gave them a very short story to
solve that had some numbers in it and they had to add the numbers together and this one was more
challenging, and they did well in it with me helping them to explain it in more details.

Describe (D):
The lesson takes place in Al Alfiah Filipino Private School [AFPS] on the 4 th of March on Sunday,
MST and I prepared the lesson plan on Thursday, for KG 2 students. I wanted s tudents to identifying
the meaning of addition and addition sign, recognize and use numbers 1 to 20, represent and determine
amounts of objects, when they are put together, to know how to add and count to answer ‘how many’,
and to count groups up to 10/ 20 objects. I was able to achieve my teaching goals this time, because
the lesson was easy for them, they did great, the only difficulty I think they faced was adding bigger
numbers and not being able to represent those numbers with their fingers to count, b ut later on, I told
them to draw to make it easier, and MST gave them sticks to represent the numbers they want to add.

Analyze (A):
Students were well behaved at the beginning of the lesson, but couldn’t focus more, some students
did misbehave and the others were well behaved. I think that happened for more than one reason, the
first one is before I start teaching MST had kind of a sho rt lesson to teach and the students was 100%
focus, when I started teaching students was still 100% focus, and I also used the classdojo site this
time also since it worked well last time, students were engaged to behave well to get rewarded, but
one student keep on misbehaving and not following the rules so he lost some points and he didn’t
seem to care about that, and at the end of the day all the students were getting rewarded, but this
student didn’t because he had (-6) points, so when the students left I told him if you want a reward
just say and he said at first he doesn’t want to, so later he came and said he wants the reward and I
told him to tell what did he do wrong first then if he admits that the things that he had done during
the class were wrong I will reward him, he toke longer time to think and I waited, but he didn’t want
to say what did he do wrong and says he didn’t want to reward and he does not care. Students were
able to participate in the lesson, it was an easy lesson for them, they wer e active and they answered
all the questions giving to them. Students were engaged well enough to let them focus on the main
idea of the lesson, they liked the poem and the examples given, they also like the game/ challenge I
gave them, I gave each one of them a small paper and asked them to draw the addition sign if they
know and if they don’t know they have to ask their friends before asking me (ask 3 before me) and it
worked very well. MST and I hanged their small papers in the classroom.

Appraise (A):
Students seem to easily understand the topic, since addition is not a new thing to them and adding is
easy, they faced difficulty only with bigger numbers (more than 10) because they only knew how to
count using their fingers, then the teacher (I) explained an easier w ay to count, the students were able
to use that way to answer their questions by themselves. During this lesson I met all my learning
outcomes, students were able to identify the meaning of addition and the addition sign, they were able
to count up to 20 and recognize the numbers, and they were able to answer how many.

Transform (T):
In the future, I might try to explain the easier ways to count without using their fingers before starting
the independence work instead of telling only those who weren’t able to count with their fingers when
they get higher numbers. I need to talk to students who misbehave and penalize them so that they
won’t do it again and distract others.
