2 Differentiate pattern classification from pattern identification
3 What is meant by pattern space?
4 Why decision rule is significant in pattern recognition system development?
5 For a 2 class 3 feature problem in PR system, what discriminant functions could be
used? Justify your answer

7 What features may be extracted for a pattern recognition system designed to classify
the ripped fruits from unripped fruits.
8 How do you evaluate the performance of a classifier?
9 How are unsupervised learning methods validated?
10 Write few formulas for measuring similarity between any two patterns.
Part – B
(Answer all the questions 2 x 10 = 20marks)
Q. No. Questions
Explain the Bayesian estimation or Bayesian learning approach to pattern classification
11 problems.
12 In a two class problem, 75 of 100As and 50 of 60Bs are correctly classified by the
classifier. Determine the following: a) TP b)TN c) FP d) FN e) FRR for class A f)
FRR for class B. Is it possible to determine FAR with the given data. If so calculate
FAR, otherwise justify that why FAR calculation is not possible. Also calculate the
FAR and FRR for the classifier and find the integer confusion matrix.
13 Explain supervise learning and parametric estimation in detail.
Part – C
(Answer all the questions 1 x 10 = 10marks) Case study
Q. No. Questions
Let consider the following case of Pattern Recognition problem.
14 Problem Description: A vegetable packing plant wants to automate the process of sorting the
incoming vegetable on a conveyor belt according to species. As a pilot project it is decided to
try to separate the vegetable bitter gourd from ridged gourd using optical sensing. A camera is
set up to take some sample images. Features suggested to explore for use in the classifier are
length, lightness.
Given that there are truly differences between the population of bitter gourd and that of ridged
gourd
a. Develop a model to classify the species. [6]
b. Draw the decision region [2]
c. Is it a linear class problem? Justify the answer. [1]
d. Write the decision rule assuming that you are using StatPR approach [1]
