Classroom Observation notes

Teaching strategies throughout the classroom.

 Think, pair, share. (Used quite often when a new topic is discussed).
 Group work- groups of 2-5 students
 Students present their work after a task has been completed. Sharing in front
of the whole class.
 Read, pause and reflect. Used when reading or watching new content.

Verbal communication strategies used to support student engagement.

 Positive reinforcement
 Positive feedback beginning, during and after students work.
 Rewarding students by placing a ‘coin’ in the class jar. (If jar is filled, students
are rewarded with a movie on the last day of term)
 Rhetorical questioning throughout tasks for reinforcement.
 Teacher “1,2” Students: “Eyes on you” (Students stop what they are doing
and direct their attention to the teacher.
 Positive reinforcement when a student puts their hand up to ask a question.

Non-Verbal communication strategies used to support student engagement.

 Teacher has a bell charm next to his desk. Rings the bell for students’
attention when the classroom setting is too loud. Teacher remains silent
until students are focused.
 Teacher stands at the front of the room and raises one arm, the other hand
over his mouth. Students stop what they are doing and copy.
 Clapping rhythm that students repeat.
 Teacher stands in front of the room and performs a series of arm movements
(like the game Simon says, without words), students stop what they are doing
and copy.

Behaviour management:
 If a student enters the classroom running or shouting, they are asked to leave
the classroom and walk back in respectfully.
 If students are misconducting during whole class tasks on the floor, they are
asked to go sit at their desk until they are ready to join the group again.
 Classroom poster of noise scale. Before a task is about to be conducted,
teacher reinforces the noise scale on the wall and appoints where the noise
level should be at for this task. Will interrupt the class if the noise level goes
above expected level.
