INTRODUCTION

The gospel for Easter’s seventh Sunday is always taken from the long Amen.
prayer Jesus prays for his followers in John’s gospel on the night before his
death, and always includes Jesus’ desire that his followers will be one as GATHERING SONG: For the Beauty of the Earth (ELW 879)
he and the Father are one. This oneness is not mere doctrinal agreement or
institutional unity, but mutual abiding, interpenetrating life, mutual love GREETING
and joy. This oneness is the work of the Spirit whom we have received but

Mothering God, you gave me birth in the bright morning of this world.

Mothering Christ, you took my form, offering me your food and light,

Let us pray.
Gracious and glorious God, you have chosen us as your own, and by the
powerful name of Christ you protect us from evil. By your Spirit transform
us and your beloved world, that we may find our joy in your Son, Jesus
Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever.

God has borne witness to the gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ. Whoever

If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is
the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. 10Those who believe
in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not
believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that
God has given concerning his Son. 11And this is the testimony: God gave us
eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12Whoever has the Son has life;
whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

GOSPEL: John 17:6-19
As the Gospel is announced, worshippers are invited to trace a cross upon
their forehead, then over their lips, and then over their hearts, silently

my lips, and in my heart.”

In this reading the church hears Jesus’ words on the night before his death.
This gospel reports the words of Jesus’ prayer, a prayer for his disciples
and for all who would believe in him through their words.
[Jesus prayed:] 6“I have made your name known to those whom you gave
me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they
have kept your word. 7Now they know that everything you have given me
is from you; 8for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and
they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they
have believed that you sent me. 9I am asking on their behalf; I am not
asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me,
because they are yours. 10All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I
have been glorified in them. 11And now I am no longer in the world, but
they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in
your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are
one. 12While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have
given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one

As they recite the creed, worshippers are invited to bow beginning with the
words “born of the virgin Mary,” until the words “he descended to the
dead.”
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and
earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally
begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God
from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he
came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the
virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified

We entrust all our prayers to you, gracious God. Receive them by the

CONFESSION AND PROCLAMATION OF FORGIVENESS

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We
have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have
done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our
whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the
sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us,
and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for
his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of
the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the
entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the +

Let us pray. Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth. Day by day
you shower us with blessings. As you have raised us to new life in Christ,
give us glad and generous hearts, ready to praise you and to respond to
those in need, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
DIALOGUE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Worshippers are invited to bow with the consecration of the Lord’s body
and blood, each time the words “Do this for the remembrance of me,” are
spoken.

You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God. Your glory fills heaven
and earth. You so loved the world that you gave your only Son, so that
everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life. We
bless you and thank you for sending him to accomplish all things to heal
and save us and all of all creation.

In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

PREFACE and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

Risen Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom

trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Therefore let us keep the feast! Alleluia!

Lutherans believe, teach and confess that we receive the true Body and
Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. If you desire to pick up the cross and
live in Christ, we hope you will receive with us. Even if you do not feel
prepared to receive the sacrament today we hope you will join us at the
table. Simply hold your hands over your heart and the pastor will give you
a blessing. Pastor will be glad to discuss Holy Communion and Holy
Baptism with you!

Matthias, Apostle
Monday, May 14, 2018
Matthias was the apostle added to the Twelve after Jesus' resurrection, as a
replacement for the dead Judas Iscariot. He had traveled among the
followers of Jesus throughout the Lord's ministry. Formerly commemorated
on February 24, Matthias's celebration is moved to May 14 in agreement
with most Western calendars.
Erik, King of Sweden, martyr, died 1160
Friday, May 18, 2018
Erik is considered the patron saint of Sweden. As king of that nation, he
tried to bring peace in the region, and to spread Christianity in Scandinavia.
He was also known for his attempts to make fair laws and to protect those
who were poor or sick.
The Altar flowers are administered by the worship committee. The 2018
Altar Flower chart is posted on the bulletin board in the lower lobby and
there is attached to it a tear-off sheet for donors to complete and hand into
the office or place in the offering plate for proper publication in the
bulletin.
