This unit introduces students to advanced shear strength and consolidation
concepts; further analytical and numerical analysis techniques for foundations;
slope stability; and geotechnical engineering processes. The unit links to, and
draws upon, the engineering aspects of design, construction management,

construction health and safety, sustainability, soil mechanics, fluid mechanics,
statics, and dynamics. This unit is reliant on on-line materials. Students must
have reliable access to a high-speed broadband internet connection for
multimedia materials.
1. Apply the theoretical principles of soil behaviour to the analysis of
geotechnical engineering problems and the design of their solutions.
2. Analyse the effects of geotechnical engineering decisions upon workplace
health and safety, service life health and safety, the environment, and the
