Strengths of the lesson:

Students were seated on the mat for the opener. A review of previous learning was conducted,
first students were asked to name some materials that they know, and then they were asked to
think about materials that were suitable or unsuitable for specific purposes (visual images used
to show products).
Students were sent to tables for centre work, group by group, with instructions for each group
before they moved. Materials for centre work for prepared in advance and on tables ready for
students. Centres included gluing various materials onto a poster or inside a frame, building
with materials and a sorting worksheet.
It was good to see you moving around the groups and further scaffolding your initial
instructions (success criteria).
Students were engaged in the activities and seemed to be really enjoying them.
Students were instructed to tidy up and were then brought back to the mat. Some students
shared their work and identified the materials they had used. This work would make a great
materials display!

Classroom management techniques used included a clapping pattern to gain attention (this
worked well); ‘1, 2, 3, eyes on me’ (wait until you have everyone’s eyes before speaking);
time limits for tasks; reminders about ‘inside voices’.
Areas for development:

Lesson plan: prior learning – what have they already learned about materials? What are you
building on? You have suggested a couple of key words, students could use when describing
materials – what other language should they know already? This language needs to be
reinforced continuously.
Students may need a little more than ‘tidy-up’. Tell them exactly what you expect, e.g. work
left on tables, materials back in trays, chairs pushed in.

Goals:
Reading aloud/pronunciation – still a few issues here, make sure you have checked key words
(e.g. rain boot) with your MST prior to the lesson.
Communicating with MST – you have made a plan with your MST to teach every day, plus do
morning routines and news. You will also go on a field trip with the class.
A = Exceptional, B = Very Good, C = Satisfactory, D = Marginal and F = Unsatisfactory
