Virginia lawmakers prepare for redistricting

ALEXANDRIA, Va.- Let the
power-grab begin.
As Virginia lawmakers gear up
for the 2011 redistricting, new
lines are being drawn that could
decide who holds power in the
Commonwealth and from where
they come.
Both committees from the
Senate and House are launching
town hall meetings this month
redrawn every ten years to match
up with the new census data.
Del. David Albo, R- Springfield,
said, “The redistricting is a bill
just like any other bill” so it would
need approval from the House,
Senate, and the governor.
“This has not been tested be-
fore,” said Sen. Ralph Smith, R-
Roanoke. “There’s been a lot of
motivation to not play games as
both parties have been guilty of
in the past.”

for him or her. MacMichael says
that Zuckerman and Brill also
refer students to him. The goal
is to get students plugged in to
the teacher who can best inspire
them musically. MacMichael says
he loves to help his guitar and
drum students get started in their
musical careers.
Keith MacMichael is fascinated
by what takes place in the hu-
man brain while a student learns
to play an instrument. He would
like to somehow be able to see
what goes on in the brain when
students learn how to play what
they were formerly unable to
play. MacMichael is also inter-
ested in the therapeutic abilities
of music. He wonders if it has the
power to help stroke patients and
others suffering from medical
challenges. He also hopes to have
drum circles in his studio at some
point in the future.
As far as his own musical plea-
sure is concerned, MacMichael
is getting back into performing
after being away from it for eight
years. At that time, he was in-
jured in a car accident when he
was rear-ended. About six years
ago, MacMichael was diagnosed
with chemical sensitivity. He had
been exposed to black mold prior
to that time. Because of this con-
dition, MacMichael requests that
his students not wear strong co-
lognes or perfumes.
Keith MacMichael is mar-
ried and has one grown son and
a younger son who is home-
schooled. MacMichael is grate-
ful for the support that he has
received from his wife over the
years.

Doggy Days of Summer at Belle Grove Plantation

The handlers generally train the
dogs to voice commands. Once
the voice commands are learned,
most handlers substitute whistles
so the dog can hear the handler
when far away. Whether using
fingers or a purchased whistle,
the handler and the dog work as a
team to move sheep.
In the Nursery Trials the dogs
must “outrun” or run in a large
arc around the sheep so they can
get behind the sheep without be-
ing seen. They then move the
sheep straight ahead between two
panels, then forward and around
their handler’s back, around two
more panels and then, with help
from the handler, the sheep are
herded into a pen. It sounds easy
enough. But it isn’t. Each dog has
ten minutes to complete all of
the above tasks. Deductions are
taken for mistakes made.
Watching the dogs move the
sheep is fascinating. The han-
dler and dog act as a team. The
handler guides the dog with the
use of commands. How a dog is
taught to outrun is amazing. One
technique includes working the
dog in a round pen so they begin
to understand the arcing move-
ment. Other handlers say that if
the handler is between the dog
and the sheep the dog will auto-
matically make an arcing move-
ment. The training for these dogs
is intense and continues until
they retire. The dogs do as they
are told. Sit. Stop. Move right.

had skin graft surgery on her legs
