ver found yourself in a discussion—or bar
bet—about just how fast a Trophy Truck
is? Be prepared to collect (or pay up). Jay
Reichert and his crew at R&D Motorsports
took their Jimco-built Trophy Truck, nick-
named the War Machine, south of the border to
the Laguna Salada dry lake in Baja last fall and
hit 136 mph on the radar gun. The Guinness Book of World
Records lists 124 mph as the current Trophy Truck record to beat,
so it looks like Reichert has bragging rights at least. He’ll need to
duplicate the effort in front of Guinness judges to make it official.
Based on a new-generation, lightweight Jimco chassis, the
War Machine is powered by a Kroyer Racing Engines small-block
V-8 and rolls on BFGoodrich tires.
“I just wanted to start a war and see who was the fastest in off-
road racing,” said Reichert, who believes his truck has 140 mph or
more in it, given the right conditions.

GO RANCHO play, and for some unknown reason they agreed to let us borrow
it for a weeklong vacation evaluation. We put about 1,500 miles
on the truck and really enjoyed the way it rode.
In our part of the country it’s very common to see new lifted
trucks, and the style of these new GM trucks when lifted really
appeals to us. The new engine laughed at the added weight and
tire size this truck was fitted with, and we can honestly say that
we never felt we needed a truck larger than a half-ton for the
type of use we put it through. Overall we think this particular
recipe of lift and truck will be just what many truck buyers are
looking for.

1 The new ’14 GM half-ton trucks have electric
rack-and-pinion steering. This required a
redesign to the current style of suspension lifts
that Rancho offers and resulted in a kit that
gained them 6 inches of lift over their prior 4
inches. Upon testing the suspension to verify
its FMVSS-126 compatibility (read more about
FMVSS-126 suspension regulations in an upcom-
ing issue), Rancho can now foresee more 6-inch
lift options for future vehicles.

F
amed American author John Steinbeck wrote a book titled Travels With Charlie back in
the ’60s about a trip around the U.S. with his dog Charlie, in a GMC truck, with a slide-in
camper. We recently copied this idea with a Four Wheel popup camper, the Rancho Sus-
pension GMC, and three dogs named Batman, Baxter, and Lulu. It wasn’t around the whole
country, but it was a few days of exploring dirt tracks and coastal towns of California. We
spent nights in the camper with a warm heater, hot running water, and plenty of room for
furry critters to lie about. During the day we rumbled down dirt coast roads and climbed up
steep muddy NorCal trails, and the lifted crew cab never missed a beat or even noticed that
the camper was on its back.
The Hawk model camper we tested has an aluminum frame and heavy fabric upper sides
that collapse to give it a low overall height when in travel mode to help sneak under branch-
es and reduce the center of gravity height. When popped up it offers over 6 feet of interior
height. Our version had two large beds, perfect for two or three adults or one adult and
three dogs. Other versions offer a shower and toilet options. Each camper is built to order in
the Four Wheel camper factory in Woodland, California. Our only major issue was requiring
a step stool to get in and out of the camper on the lifted truck.
Look for an upcoming episode of Dirt Every Day on the Motor Trend channel on YouTube
(goo.gl/nBtui, or scan the code at right with your smartphone) to see our travel adventures
and find out more on the Four Wheel camper.

attach above the skidplate for increased clear-
incredible articulation and stability, but pack-
aging is more challenging than a traditional
four-link or radius arms with a Panhard bar.

VERDICT
I
f you’re looking for a one-size-fits-most
truck, then the EcoDiesel 1500 could
be your size. It will tow a small Jeep, a
side-by-side, or a little camper trailer with
ease and economy. It could make for a fun
prerunner or camping/hunting truck and
still get good mileage back to the suburbs.
It rides awesome as a daily driver with the
five-link rear suspension. It’s quiet but still
sounds like a diesel so you know what’s
under the hood. It’s not inexpensive to buy
(tested at $55,375 window sticker), and
diesel fuel isn’t the cheapest at the pump,
but it can be economical in the long run. And
it finally scratches that small diesel itch that
so many have. We can honestly say that this
small diesel is worth the wait.

his list is not meant to be all-inclusive, but rather to give you an idea of the variety of
skills required by a race team beyond being able to mash a gas pedal. The more of these
skills you possess, the more valuable you are going to be to a race team and the more
likely you will get an invitation to Baja.
MECHANICAL KNOWLEDGE. The ability to turn a wrench is good, but being able to iden-
tify problems, quickly find their cause, and remedy them can mean the difference between
reaching the checkered flag and throwing in the towel.
MATH. With vehicles leaving the starting line at different times, you might finish ahead of a
competitor but still lose based on time. Dedicating a person to monitoring time splits between
teams in your class is important for knowing how hard the driver has to push in the race.
RACE RADIOS. Programming, operating, and speaking clearly on race radios is crucial for
communications in Baja.
LOGISTICS. No one has infinite resources, so it is critical that the people and parts you
have be in the right place at the right time.
GPS. Lowrance is the GPS of choice in race vehicles and prerunners, but they aren’t the
most intuitive products on the market. Knowing how to load maps, save points, and navi-
gate with a GPS are important skills. Being handy with a good old-fashioned paper map is
equally important.
DRIVING A TOW RIG. The roads of Baja are often narrow and filled with crazy drivers and
chase teams. Being comfortable driving with a trailer (and being able to back a trailer) on
these roads is a skill every team needs.
SPEAKING SPANISH. You don’t have to be Antonio Banderas, but knowing a few words of
Spanish can be key when you need to find an alternator in a small town or ask for directions.

best to play it safe and not drink local tap water.
YEARS HEADLAMP. At some point you will likely be wrenching or looking for lost lug nuts in
the dark, so best to be prepared and keep both hands free.
When the Baja 1000 was first held, there were very few paved roads
on the peninsula. Later there were no speed limits on the roads and
triple-digit speeds were commonplace. These days all competitors are
limited to 60 mph on the short pavement sections of the course.
This is how many people it takes to run a successful race in Baja, at a minimum. Each member of the
Coast Aluminum team had specific tasks to complete in order to make it to the finish line. Sam Cothrun
(standing, back row) and I spent 10 hours in the Coast Aluminum Class 10 buggy while running the last
320 miles of the race course. In Baja you can have as many drivers and navigators as you want in the
race, which allows more people to drive and helps keep a fresh mind and body behind the wheel.

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR CB RAIL COMMUNICATION IS KEY,
whether your spotter is telling
you where to put your tires or
when you are trying to reach
base camp to tell them you are
upside-down. That is why we
require a Citizens Band radio
(CB) on the Ultimate Adventure. Having a
CB is but the first step in communicating
on the trail though, not the last. The most
important and often overlooked aspect of
installing a mobile CB is tuning the antenna.
While a properly tuned antenna will result
in strong radio performance, an untuned
antenna can result in poor performance and
can even damage your radio from excessive
radio frequency heat that is reflected back
into the radio instead of transmitted out.
This is the issue we were having in
one of our trail trucks. We could hear our
friends if they were nearby, but they could
not hear us transmit worth a darn. So we
headed to our local truck stop and got
some help from Cecil at Airtime Communi-
cations. Cecil not only tuned our antenna
to get our CB working properly, but he also
gave us a crash course on the theory and
application of CB radios. At truck stops
all over the country you can not only buy
CB radios and antennas, but you can also
find guys like Cecil who are experts at the
dying art of tuning an antenna.
Tuning is adjusting an antenna so that
the radio’s output power is transformed
into radio signals as efficiently as pos-
sible. To achieve that, it is necessary
to lengthen or shorten the CB antenna
slightly. The goal of tuning is to match the
antenna’s physical length with that of the
radio frequency being used to maximize
performance and transmission efficiency.
How do you know what length you need?
That is where a standing wave ratio (SWR)
meter comes in. You can buy an SWR
meter and a coax jumper cable for as little
as $25. It’s a good investment, particularly
if you can get your wheeling buddies to
chip in and everyone uses the SWR meter
to tune up their radios.
You still need to know how to use the
SWR meter though, and that’s when a guy

WildPeak M/T tires,
and so far we are
more than impressed.
We don’t usually gush
over a tire, since most MUDDER
of the time a tire does its job just fine—the
job of being round, black, and holding air.
But these Falkens have acted a little differ-
ent from the norm. Namely, they are quiet
for such an aggressive tread and they
work as good as or better than expected.
First a disclaimer. These tires are proto-
types, such that we actually had to sign
waivers and releases and a bunch of legal
mumbo jumbo before Falken would let us
test them. On top of that there is already
talk that Falken may redesign them slight-
ly before they go on sale (we hope not).
We tested a set of the 37x12.50R17
WildPeak M/T tires in Load Range D on our
Alabama Army Truck project and wrapped
them around some American Outlaw 17x8.5
aluminum Patrol wheels with an 8-on-61⁄2
bolt pattern and roughly 41⁄2 inches of back-
spacing that we ordered through Discount
Tire Direct. We received the tires and, after
mounting them, headed straight down the
road to get as many miles as possible on
them before this issue went to print. What
we found both on- and off-road surprised us.
If a tire can get your truck into a spot
where you smash in the bed on a big rock,
does that make it a good tire? OK, we
know we can’t blame a tire for driver stu-
pidity, but we are going to send our friends
at Falken the bill anyways.

it was exciting to see the Falkens working
on the rocks. These buggies are built around
a Mopar Hemi engine and Spidertrax axles
with an Atlas transfer case hiding in the
middle and Fox racing shocks. And the best
part is these cars will eventually be offered
as rentals in case you want to come race
in an Ultra4desert rock race. For more info

I went out on a ride on the trails
around one of the lakes here, and my
buddy got stuck. As I tried to go around
him, the front dropped in a deep hole and
I just about went over in the mud. I ended
up getting winched out and then was
able to pull him out.

NOTHING’S AS WILD.
ROVs can be hazardous to operate. Improper use can cause severe injury or death. Each rider must wear a seat belt, approved helmet, eye protection and protective gear. Each rider must use handholds/steering wheel and stay completely
inside the vehicle. Each rider must be able to sit with their back against the seat, feet fl at on fl oor and hands on handholds/steering wheel and must read and understand the operator’s manual before riding. Follow all instructions and
warnings. Avoid abrupt maneuvers, hard acceleration when turning, and sidehilling. Avoid paved surfaces. Slow down before entering a turn. Don’t operate on public roads unless designated for off-highway vehicle access — collisions
with cars and trucks can occur. Never engage in stunt driving. Never drive or ride under influence of alcohol or drugs. Avoid excessive speeds and be particularly careful on diffi cult terrain. All ROV operators must have a valid driver’s
license. No operators under age 16. Never carry a passenger in the cargo box or exceed seating capacity. Do not shoot from or lean firearms or bows against the ROV. Arctic Cat recommends that all riders take a training course. For
safety and training information, go to www.rohva.org. Along with concerned conservationists everywhere, Arctic Cat urges you to “Tread Lightly” on public and private lands. Ride only on designated areas or trails. Preserve your future
riding opportunities by showing respect for the environment, local laws and the rights of others when riding. Arctic Cat,® Drive Evolution,™ Share Our Passion™ and Wildcat™ are trademarks
