Two wooden members of 80 mm  120 mm uniform rectangular cross section are


jointed by the simple glued scarf splice shown as figure below. Knowing that β=22o and the
maximum allowable stresses in the joint are, respectively, 400kPa in tension (perpendicular
to the splice) and 600kPa in shear (parallel to the splice). Determine the largest centric load
P that can be applied.

6. Two wooden members of 80 mm  120 mm uniform rectangular cross section are

jointed by the simple glued scarf splice shown as figure in Exercise 5. Knowing that   25o
and that centric load of magnitude P  10kN are applied to the members as in previous figure.
Determine (a) the in-plane shearing stress parallel to the splice, (b) the normal stress
perpendicular to the splice.
7. The centric force P is applied to short post as shown in figure below. Knowing that
the stresses on plane a-a are   15MPa and   5MPa . Determine (a) the angle  that
plane a-a forms with the horizontal, (b) the maximum compressive stress in the post.
