Internship Reflection

Through my internships I was able to enhance my medical terminology

knowledge and get an idea about how medical ethics is used on a daily-basis in a hospital
environment. I got insight into what it is like to be a hospital administrator, an RN in a hospital
in medical surgery unit, and different types of career profession in radiation oncology.
I noticed the differences in all three hospitals, Providence, Kaiser Permanente, and
Tuality. At Providence I had a two hour internship on the various careers under radiation
oncology. There I met with different radiologists and learned that a radiology technician’s is the
most appealing to my interests. They are not as close to patients as are the nurses. I liked this
small internship, because I learned through on hands work and through a presentation and a
meeting room.
At Tuality hospital I did a 24 hour internship with an RN and I was able to experience the
care taking of patients by helping out the nurse I shadowed. I realized that there is a lot of
connection between the patients and the nurses if the patients stay overnight for several days. I
realized how busy nurses are at Tuality with several patients, yet are able to keep track of the
conditions accurately and know there history. I liked the at medical surgery unit environment,
but realized that I do not like dealing with young middle aged patients, because I witnessed the
pain some of them went through because of their illness or medical condition, and some with
terminal illness, with a lot of family to care for and life ahead that they would be missing out on.
I was emotionally affected through this experience, but I learned a lot and admire the nurses’ job.
At Kaiser Permanente I was able to follow a Hospital Administrator around the hospital
for 8 hours. I did not know how much work a hospital administrator has on his/her hands. I
admire their perseverance and work. The hospital administrator has to keep up daily with the
patients’ satisfactions through meetings with other coworkers, and has to keep up with any small
issue related to hospital maintenance. It his/her job to know about everything that happens in the
hospital, and has a very important leadership role in the health environment. Before this
internship I did not know a lot about his job, and now that I know, I realize that a hospital is
always being checked with any small or big detail or issue, like a floor tile peeling off, to a rail
missing on top of the roof for people to hold on, or even a note of dissatisfaction from a patient.
