1.0 Introduction
1.1 Data logger
 A data logger (data recorder) is an electronic device that records data over
time or in relation to location either with a built in instrument or sensor or via
external instruments and sensors
 They are based on a digital processor (or computer)
 They are generally small, battery powered, portable, and equipped with a
microprocessor, internal memory for data storage, and sensors

1.2 Momentum and Impulse

When an object is moving with a speed in a straight line, we say that it has linear
momentum. The amount of linear momentum of the object depent on its mass and
velocity. We define momentum as the product of mass and velocity:
𝑀𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑢𝑚 = 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 × 𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦
𝑝=𝑚×𝑣
For a system consisting of several different masses with different mass and velocity,
the total momentum of the system is the sum of the vector momentum of the body. If
no external force acts on a system, the amount of linear momentum for the system is
fixed.
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑢𝑚 𝑎𝑓𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 = 𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑢𝑚 𝑏𝑒𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒
𝑚1𝑣1 + 𝑚2𝑣2 = 0
The collision can be divided into two types: elastic collision and collision is not
elastic. A collision is said to be chewy if its kinetic energy is over. In collision
inconsistent, kinetic energy is unacceptable. However, the overall energy is either in
collision or chewing.
Since no external force acts on both the systems, the total momentum in each
system remains the same. We can say that the total momentum in a system is
conserved. This is the principle of conservation of momentum which state that:
In the absence of an external force, the total momentum of a system remains
unchanged.

3.1 Equipment and Apparatus

Apparatus Function
Air Track An air track is used to study motion in
low friction environment. Air is pumped
through a hollow track with fine holes all
along the track that allows specially
fitted air track cars to glide relatively
friction-free.
Software (tracker)

Software tracker is used to run

experiments to more precisely identify an
experiment's results.

Computer with USB port

Software tracker will run on this
computer. Through that software, the
data will be displayed after the
experiment is done.

USB wire USB is an industry standard that was

developed to define cables, connectors
and protocols for connection,
communication, and power supply
between personal computers and their
peripheral devices.

Toy car Toy cars are perfect vehicles for a wide
variety of science experiments, which
can tell a lot about things like energy,
inertia, momentum, friction and vectors.

Wood block & Spoon Wood and spoon are used to make
experiments in these experiments to
determine the time taken for the collision
to occur.

3.2 Types of surface contact

For this experiment we use two type of surface contact :

Sponge

Wooden block

3.3 Planning and Doing Your Experiment

Figure 1

a) Set up the experiment as shown in the Figure 1

b) Record a video during the experiment, then save the video
c) Transfer the recorded experiment to the computer by using a USB cable
d) Open tracker software. Then open the file and select the video.
e) Click the ‘clip settings’ icon and set the time frame (start frame and end frame)
f) Click the ‘create a new track’ icon and select ‘point mass’. At point mass, right
click and select ‘name’ and name your graph. Then edit the mass of toy car at the
top right
g) Click calibration tool and select ‘calibration stick’. Put the calibration stick at the
measurement on the part of the marked size on and edit the size of the according
to actual measurements
h) Click ‘coordinate axes’ icon and position the axis perpendicular to the track
i) Click ‘autotracker’ icon and and click search and wait the data to recorded
automatically
j) Select the axis of the graph. In this experiment you need to choose velocity versus
time and momentum versus time.

6
k) By using the data provided, you can calculate the time taken during collision
occur and calculate the force act during collision occur.
l) You may repeat the experiment by using sponge as the collision with flexible
surface contact.

3.5 Result

Through experiments conducted, there are some data differences that we get with the
software tracker. From experiments conducted using two types of surface ie sponge and
wooden block, there is a difference in terms of impulse value and momentum that can be.
Below is one of the impulse values that has been calculated based on the graph using the
software tracker:-

Wooden Block Sponge

𝑇𝑓 = 1.43 𝑠 𝑇𝑖 = 1.40 𝑠 𝑇𝑓 = 0.40 𝑠 𝑇𝑖 = 0.27 𝑠

∆𝑇 = 0.03 𝑠 ∆𝑇 = 0.13 𝑠
𝐼⃗ = ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
∆𝑃 = ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝑚𝑣𝑓 − 𝑚𝑣⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗𝑖 𝐼⃗ = ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
∆𝑃 = ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝑚𝑣𝑓 − 𝑚𝑣⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗𝑖
= (0.18)(+0.17) − (0.18)(−0.78) = (0.18)(0.63) − (0.18)(−0.98)
= 0.17 𝑘𝑔. 𝑚/𝑠 (0.14 + 0.03) = 0.29 𝑘𝑔. 𝑚/𝑠 (0.18 + 0.11)

𝐼 𝐼
𝐼 = ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝐹𝑛𝑒𝑡 . ∆𝑡 → 𝐹𝑛𝑒𝑡 = 𝐼 = ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝐹𝑛𝑒𝑡 . ∆𝑡 → 𝐹𝑛𝑒𝑡 =
∆𝑡 ∆𝑡
0.17 0.29
= =
0.03 0.13
= 5.7𝑁 = 2.23𝑁

After the experiment was performed and the data were taken using the tracker
software, the collision on the surface of the sponge took longer than the surface of the
wood. Therefore, the value of wood impulses is greater than the value of impulse sponge.
