ABSTRAK

Penelitian ini melaporkan tentang model mental siswa pada konsep struktur atom dan ikatan
kimia. Tujuan penelitian untuk mengungkap profil model mental siswa berdasarkan tingkat
kemampuan akademik, tingkatan kelas dan gender. Wawancara menggunakan teknik clinikal
interview dilakukan terhadap 9 orang siswa yang ditentukan secara purposive sampling.
Partisipan terdiri dari masing-masing 3 orang siswa kelas X, XI dan XII Program IPA. Data yang
diperoleh diolah secara kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa representasi siswa
tentang konsep atom dan ikatan kimia secara verbal memiliki perbedaan dengan representasi
visual. Untuk representasi submikroskopis partisipan cenderung memberikan pilihan yang benar
pada jawaban alternatif yang disediakan peneliti pada model mental target tentang struktur atom
dan ikatan kimia.

ABSTRACT

This research reports on students' mental models on the concept of atomic structure and chemical
bonds. The objectives of the study were to reveal the profile of mental models of students based
on the level of academic ability, grade level and gender. Interview using clinical interview
technique conducted on 9 students determined by purposive sampling. Participants consist of 3
students each grade X, XI and XII Science Program. The data obtained were processed
qualitatively. The results showed that students' representation of the concept of atoms and
chemical bonds verbally differed from visual representations. For the submicroscopic
representation participants are likely to give the correct choice on the alternative answers
provided by the researcher on the target mental model of the structure of atoms and chemical
bonds.
