Facts Review
TIW use base-ten blocks to model two digit by one digit multiplication problems.
SIC see a concretate model that shows the process
IKIHIW correctly model and solve three multiplication story problems.

Bloom's Level:
Procedure
Distribute base-10 blocks to each student or pair of students.
Pose a story problem:
Mrs. Foley has 2 dozen pair of shoes. Ms. McWethy has three times as many pair of shoes. How many
pair of shoes does Ms. McWethy have?

Ask students to identify the information from the problem (Mrs. Foley has 2 dozen pair of shoes, Ms.
McWethy has 3 times as many).
Ask students what 2 dozen means (24). Ask student what “three times as many” means (add it 3 times,
multiply by 3).

Ask students to verbally give you an answer statement (Ms. McWethy has _______ pair of shoes.).

Ask students to build the number 24 using their base-10 materials (2 tens and 4 ones). What does the 2
in the number 24 represent? (2 tens, 20). What does the 4 represent? (4 ones).

Ask students what kind of problem this is (multiplication, some may also say addition—probe further to
make sure they are not thinking it’s 24 + 3). How do they know? (Combining equal groups) Ask
students what 3 times 24 would look like and have them build it.

Have students combine the tens and the ones. Ask how much they have now (72).

Probe the students further about why the number is 72 when you see 6 tens and 12 ones. You are
looking for students to suggest that you need to trade 10 ones for a ten. If they don’t, lead them in
that direction. Have them trade 10 ones for a ten.

Ask if they would have gotten the same thing by adding 24 + 24 + 24 (yes). Why not just add then?
(Multiplying is faster)
Write 24 x 3 = 72 on the chalkboard or chart paper. Write 24 + 24 + 24 + 24 = 72 with it.

Repeat for the following stories:

Brandon has a bookshelf with 4 shelves. He put 14 books on each shelf. How many books did he put
on the bookshelf?
Information: 4 shelves, 14 books on each shelf
Answer statement: He put ___________ books on the bookshelf.
What type of problem is this? Multiplication (combining equal groups; parts are equal, looking for the
whole)

Farmer Brown planted 5 rows of corn in his garden. He planted 17 corn plants in each row. How many
corn plants did Farmer Brown plant?
Information: 5 rows, 17 corn plans in each row
Answer statement: Farmer Brown planted ___________ corn plants.
What type of problem is this? Multiplication (combining equal groups; parts are equal, looking for the
whole)

Each wall of a square room is 18 feet long. What is the perimeter of the room?
Information: 4 walls, each wall is 18 feet long
