Vietnam War
The Vietnam War took place from November 1, 1955 to April 30, 1975. The US
intervened on March 8, 1965. The United States sent troops over to Vietnam to cool tensions
between the communist north and the democratic south. People often wonder who really won the
war, how many people were killed during the fighting and what’s the most important battle of
the war.
Although Vietnam won the war, they only won objectively. By that, I mean that Vietnam
was able to capture all of the south and make US leaders pull out our troops out of Vietnam.
However, the US won the military side of the war. “Military-wise, the U.S. arguably never lost
any major battles. However, it could not stand the constantly increasing loss of American lives
and the economic burden the war carried on its people and was eventually forced to leave
Vietnam before the war ended” (“Who Won the Vietnam War? - The Vietnam War”). The US
won the war military wise however North Vietnam won objectively and politically.
During the war there was a lot of casualties, the United States had the least amount of
deaths at a little over 58,000 deaths. “During the war, the United States lost 58,220 military
personnel, in which 47,434 were killed in action while 10,786 died by other causes” “Army of
the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) casualties vary. A low figure is 110,357 killed in action, while
other figures range as many as 184,000 or even as high as 250,000” (“How Many People Died In
The Vietnam War? - The Vietnam War”) As Well, there were between 195,000 and 430,000
civilian deaths from 1965 to 1974.
The most significant battle of the Vietnam War was the battle of la Drang. “The Battle of
Ia Drang was the first major battle between the United States Army and the North Vietnamese
Army-NVA, part of the Pleiku Campaign conducted early in the Vietnam War. It comprised two
main engagements” (Battle of Ia Drang - Google Search) This was the first Major battle of the
war and this battle “kicked off” the war starting the engagements between the two sides. During
this battle, both sides claimed victory although the US won objectively.
To conclude, the Vietnam War was important because it was a very important time in US
history as we saw that other people were able to hold against us and put up a good fight. We also
saw that some of our citizens we not happy with the power of the president about being able to
call war on someone.
