Abstract

The thesis is an exploration of the relationship between river Yamuna and the city of
Delhi as it exists today, with a rider on historical aspect of the relationship. It attempts
to explain the extant socio-cultural reality of an urban river. It seeks to unravel the
interactions happening at the banks of river Yamuna within the context of Delhi city
by documenting the various activities being performed throughout the year. It takes a
holistic view incorporating the political, economic, religious, and historical processes
along with the social and cultural ones while describing the relationship. It takes the
theoretical essence upon the theory of landscape and anthropological works done in
field of environment and rivers. The primary data collection is done during fieldwork
as a participant observer for about fourteen months among the people who interact
directly with the river by coming to its ghats. The data collected from field is
supplemented with the secondary research on interaction between the city and the
river.
