Analysis (just for us)
1. A. Describe the path urine takes from the papilla to the ureter.
Papillary ducts → Minor calyces → Major calyces → Pelvis → Ureter → Urinary bladder → Urethra
B. What is the role of the nephron in urine formation?
Each kidney is made up of about a million filtering units called nephrons. Each nephron filters a small amount of
blood. The nephron includes a filter, called the glomerulus, and a tubule.
C. Where are the nephrons found?
The kidney contains tiny, microscopic tubules along the loop of Henle. Nephrons are located in these small tubules.
2. What is the functional difference between the cortex and medulla of the kidney?
3. Periodically the urine formed by the kidneys contain too many ions within them; when this occurs the
formation of a kidney stone (aka "renal caliculi") may result. Where in the kidney would a kidney stone
cause the most potential damage? (Think about it...)
