ABSTRACT

Association between Mother’s Perception About Formula Milk and Giving Formula
Milk To Children Under Two Years In Ilir Timur II Subdistrict Palembang

Background. Formula milk is a food product that is intended to fulfill the nutritional needs of
children. Giving formula milk to children for each mother varies depending on the mother's
perception about formula milk. This study aims to determine the relationship between mother’s
perception about formula milk and giving formula milk to children under two years old.
Method. This research is an observational analytic with cross sectional design. This research
was carried out from November to December 2016 in a Public Health Center in Ilir Timur II
Subdistrict Palembang. The samples were taken by using a consecutive sampling method that
has fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The samples consisted of 96 respondents who
were mothers with babies aged 6-24 months and have been registered in the public health
center. The data collection was done directly using questionnaires and interviews continued
with SPSS 23 analysis.
Results. The data analysis showed that 70.8% respondents have negative perception about
formula milk, meanwhile 29.2% respondents have positive one. Whereas 75% respondents
give formula milk partially and 25% respondents give it wholly. The bivariate analysis showed
that there is no relationship between mother’s perception about formula milk and giving
formula milk (p> 0.05).
Conclusion. There is no relationship between mother's perception about formula milk and
giving formula milk to children under two years in Ilir Timur II Subdistrict Palembang.
