Hiring Process Overview

Step 1 Selection of applicants to be interviewed by HR, Principal, and

Assistant Principal

Time: ​1-2 hours

Step 2 Screening Interview with principal and/or assistant principal

Time:​ 30 minutes - 1 hour

Step 3 Interview with panel for candidates who were selected after screening

interview (principal, assistant principal, teachers)

Time: ​1 hour

Step 4 Teach lesson (observed by principal/assistant principal)- tour of

building, meet teachers and staff

Time: ​2 hours

Step 5 Final interview with principal- discuss observation and offer position

Time: ​30 minutes


Screening Interview Questions

1. Please tell us about yourself and the previous experience you have had in teaching.

Look for: Passion for teaching, students, positive past experiences

2. What makes you well-suited to teach [early childhood, elementary, middle level or

high school] students?

Look for: Understanding of students at that grade level, personal traits

3. What are some challenges that you face? How have you been working on them?

Look for: Growth mindset examples, learning from mistakes, improvement

4. If we ask previous colleagues and parents about you, what do you think they would

say?

Look for: Honesty, strong work ethic, collaboration, positive characteristics

5. What are some strategies you use to increase parent involvement?

Look for: Different modes of communication, candidate understands importance of

parent-teacher communication and success, research based strategies


Second Round Interview Questions

1. Please tell us about yourself and the previous experience you have had in teaching.

2. Why do you feel you would be a valuable asset to our team?

3. Tell us more about your instructional style. How do you teach? What would we see

in your classroom?

4. What are some strategies you would use to address students having difficulties

meeting requirements and making academic progress?

5. What are some strategies or interventions you would use to address students with

behavior challenges?

6. How do you measure student learning and check for understanding?

7. Describe a teaching experience that you would describe as a significant

accomplishment.

8. Describe a teaching experience that you was a disappointment. What did you learn

from this experience?

9. What haven’t we asked you that you would like us to know?

10. What are some questions that you would like to ask us?

1. What is your work relationship with the candidate?

2. What are the candidates greatest strengths as a teacher?

3. What are some improvements the candidate can make as a teacher?

4. How well does the candidate collaborate with other teachers and administration?

5. What are some personal qualities of the candidate that make them a good team

member?
