Applied Chemistry (AC-102)

Assignment I Due Date: March. 20, 2018 (5.00 PM)

Format Accepted: Handwritten

1) Discuss the principle, instrumentation & applications of Differential Thermal

Analysis (DTA). Also compare this technique with Differential Scanning
Calorimetry (DSC).

(2) Explain Chromophores and Auxochromes with the help of suitable examples.

(3) Discuss the Mass spectrum of 3-pentanone.

(4) Which spectroscopic technique/s is/are suitable to distinguish the following pairs?

(i) H2 C=CHCH2CRO and H3CCH=CHCRO

(ii) Pentane and Neopentane

(iii)RCOOH and RCONH2

(iv) Benzenoid and Quinoid form of phenolphthalein

(5) Provide the following informations:

Spectroscopy Source of Cause of absorption Information

electromagnetic of electromagnetic provided
radiations radiations
IR
UV

Mass

(6) Calculate the max for the given molecule using Woodward-Fieser Rule:

CH2
C
CH3
(7) 1.782 g of a sample containing Cr6+ ( aw = 52 ) is dissolved in a conical flask . An
excess of 1.5 g of Fe2+ ( aw = 55.85 ) are added which is oxidized to Fe3+ during
its reduction of Cr6+ to Cr3+ . The excess Fe2+ is titrated with 0.05 M of K2Cr2O7 and
was found to require 10 mL at the equivalent point . Calculate the %w/w
percentage of Cr6+ in the sample ?

(8) 0.5 g of an alloy containing copper Cu ( aw = 64 ) is dissolved and an excess of KI

is added . The liberated I2 is found to require 20 mL of 0.1 M Na2S2O3 in this
titration. Write the appropriate reactions involved and also Calculate the
percentage of Cu in the alloy?

(9) 4.0 g of a sample containing unknown amount of NaCl was dissolved in

distilled water and the volume was made to be 100 ml. 0.1 M standard
AgNO3 solution was used for titrating 20 ml portion of this solution using K2CrO4
as the indicator. Volume of AgNO3 used was 26.9 ml at the end point that was
marked by the formation of a deep red colour. (I) Write the reactions involved in
the above titration. (ii) Find out the % NaCl (assuming that AgNO3 reacts with NaCl
only) [At. Mass: Na =23, Ag: 108].

(10) Define titrimetric analysis and discuss the required criteria. Draw titration curves
for neutralization titration with suitable example and choose the appropriate
indicator for each titration.
