Answer All Questions:
Question 1 (10 Marks)

The speed of 8 hp, 280V, 1700 rpm separately excited dc motor is controlled by a single-phase full wave
diode bridge rectifier and boost converter with inductance L  4 mH , C  80uF and 5 kHz switching
frequency to control its armature voltage. The armature resistance is Ra  0.24  , the field circuit
resistance is R f  30  and rated field current is 2.5 A. The field circuit is controlled by single-phase
full wave controlled rectifier. The ac supply for field and armature converter circuits is one single-phase
supply with 127V, 60 Hz. Assuming 250W constant rotational losses (independent of rotor speed).
a) Draw the circuit diagram of the complete system. (2 Marks)
b) Determine the firing angle of field converter and the duty ratio of boost converter at rated
conditions. (2 Marks)
c) Determine the firing angle of field converter and the duty ratio of boost converter at 1000rpm
and 22 N.m. load. (3 Marks)
d) Determine the firing angle of field converter and the duty ratio of boost converter at 2700 rpm
and 14 N.m Load. (3 Marks)

Question-2 (10 Marks)


Three phase 6-pole, 15hP, 400V, 50Hz, Y-connected induction motor is connected to (220V, 60Hz
three-phase supply) via three-phase full wave uncontrolled rectifier, boost converter and 3-phase PWM
inverter. This system is used to control the speed of the induction motor by E/f control method. The
switching frequency of the boost converter is 10kHz and its inductance is 0.2mH. The dc link voltage is
maintained constant at Vo =700V. The motor has the following parameters per phase: Rs  0.23 ,
Rr  0.2 , X s  X r  1.22  , and X m  44  .

a)- Draw the circuit diagram of the complete system. (2 Marks)

b)- If it is required to drive a load of 67 N. m. at mechanical speed of 700 rpm, determine;


(i) The modulation index m a of the PWM inverter. (2 Marks)
(ii) The duty ratio of the boost converter. (2 Marks)

c)- If it is required to drive 10 hP mechanical load at mechanical speed of 1400 rpm, determine:
(i) The modulation index m a of the PWM inverter. (1 Marks)
(ii) The duty ratio of the boost converter. (3 Marks)
