STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The purpose of the San Bernardino City Unified School District’s Juried Student
Visual Art Exhibit is to provide secondary visual art students with the opportunity
to display and share their high-quality work with the community within a public
setting. All work must meet the criteria and quality of excellence as determined by
the Rules and Procedures Booklet for the Secondary Student Art Exhibition, the
Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools, and the
California Visual and Performing Arts Framework.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
1. Entries are limited to all students enrolled in visual arts classes at the middle
schools and high schools of SBCUSD and are inclusive of all ranges and
abilities.
2. Maximum size for 2-Dimensional pieces will be 30” x 40”. One oversized
piece is allowed per teacher, not to exceed the dimensions of the display
panel.
3. All work must be completed under the supervision of the visual art teacher.

Bernardino City Unified School District Board of Education
guidelines/policies.

ORIGINALITY CRITERIA
1. The objective of the juried art show is to promote originality and creativity in
the arts. All entries must be the original work of the student, based upon his/her
ideas exclusively.
(A) Only work that is the unique creation of the individual student should be
entered for judging. Students should not engage in reproducing any other
artist’s visual images for the purpose of presenting that work as their own.
(C) NO work will be accepted for judging if any part of the work has been
copied, in any way, from ANY copyrighted published source including
National Geographic…For example: Mickey Mouse, Bart Simpson, Arm &
Hammer Logo, Marilyn Monroe, famous singers, actors or any other
celebrity personalities.
2. The artwork also must have created under the direct supervision of a
credentialed art teacher, with NO help from any other person.
3. The teacher’s responsibility includes making known the ethics, rules, and
procedures of the district’s juried art exhibitions to all participating students.
(A) This also includes the district’s prohibition (per Board of Education Policies)
on the use of any image of any kind of weapon in any kind of artwork. NO
guns, knives, mace, arrows, swords, bombs, etc., including any type of act of
violence.
(B) The art teacher decides the appropriateness of the student work entry that
carries any doubt as to its authenticity and originality.

2-D MATTING AND FRAMING CRITERIA
All oil or acrylic paintings must be dry, framed and wired securely, suitable for
hanging, with no tape.
All work must have the artist’s statement completed and securely attached in
the correct location. (See Labeling 2D, page 6)
Plexiglas is acceptable.
No 2-D work larger than 32 X 40 in any direction, including mat or frame, will
be accepted.
THREE-DIMENSIONAL CRITERIA
All work must have the proper label, fully completed and placed in the correct
location. (See Labeling 3D, page 6)

STUDENT ARTIST STATEMENT INSTRUCTIONS
The student artist statements must be submitted with the inventory sheet
upon delivery of the artwork for judging.

PROCEDURES FOR PRE-JUDGING
The pre-judging committee, made up of SBCUSD art teachers, will “accept or
reject” all artwork according to the “Rules and Procedures” to assure that all
works to be juried meet the criteria as stated in the rules and guidelines. Work
not meeting the criteria will not be shown.
Judging will be conducted by a team of selected artists and art educators who are
well acquainted with the capabilities of students from the middle and high school
levels. Judging will take place on Friday, April 27th at 5:30 p.m. in the Citrus
Building of the National Orange Show Fairgrounds located at 689 South E Street,
San Bernardino, CA 92408
AWARDS
Best of Show and First, Second, and Third place award winners will be recognized
at the evening Awards Presentation on Monday, April 30th at 6:30 p.m. in the
Citrus Building at the National Orange Show Fairgrounds.

CATEGORIES
A category must have a minimum of six (6) entries to be eligible for judging. If less
than six (6) entries are submitted, the category will not be judged. A category with
ONLY six (6) entries may not receive an award for each place (first, second, third
or honorable mention) due to the limited competition. This will be determined by
the judges at the time of judging.

TIMELINE OF EVENTS
1. On or before Wednesday, April 25, 3:30pm: send one inventory sheet and
a copy of each artist’s statement to Bonnie.Schaab@sbcusd.k12.ca.us (cc:
Scott.Nelson@sbcusd.k12.ca.us and Gregg.Usher@sbcusd.k12.ca.us) and
retain one copy for your records.
2. Friday, April 27, 1:30-4:30pm: Please deliver all student art entries to the
Citrus Building at the National Orange Show Fairgrounds. Enter through
Gate 1 on E Street.
a. Make sure that a completed Artist Statement is attached to the back
of each piece.
b. Although the Art Gala event proceeds are a huge help toward the
cost of Best of Show and 1st Place gift cards, donations to be used
toward art award gift cards will be accepted the day art entries are
delivered to cover the balance. Please see Gregg Usher if you would
like to contribute.
3. Friday, April 27, 5:30-8:30pm: A panel of judges will adjudicate art work.
4. Monday, April 30th, 7:30am-12pm: We will need 10-12 teachers (and one
per school) to hang show entries. Again, please enter through Gate 1 on E
Street.
a. Full-day Sub code for art hanging/set-up is 879-419
b. Bring a staple gun to hang visual art pieces. We have hangers for
those items that are framed.
c. We must be finished setting up for the show by 12pm.
5. Monday, April 30, 6:30pm: The official art exhibit opening will occur that
evening at the NOS Citrus Building.
a. 6pm: Teachers, parents, and students, please plan on arriving and
enter through Gate 7 on Arrowhead Street per the request of the
Orange Show staff.
b. 6pm: Students will need to check-in at Bonnie’s table to be
recognized for any awards.
6. Monday, May 7, 7:30am: We will again need 10-12 teachers (and one per
school) to pick up Art show entries from the Citrus Building.
a. Again, please enter through Gate 1 on E Street.
b. Full-day sub code for art take-down is 879-419.

GENERAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
1. Twenty pieces (20) may be entered by each middle school teacher for all
categories combined.
2. Twenty-five (25) pieces may be entered by each high school teacher for all
categories combined.
3. Verify and type all information on labels. Make sure that all labels are
PROPERLY and firmly attached to entries. (See Labeling Procedures, page
6.)
4. Mats must be clean and pictures properly backed to prevent damage in
handling.
5. Each teacher is responsible for delivering entries to the Citrus Building at
the National Orange Show on Friday, April 27th, 2018 between the hours of
1:30 - 4:30pm. Entries not on the premises by 4:30 p.m. on the day of the
judging will not be juried or hung. The Visual and Performing Arts contact
phone is (909) 473-2090.
6. The District assumes no responsibility for loss, damage, or breakage.
Entries that are breakable are entered at the artist’s own risk.
7. The official Opening will be held Monday, April 30th beginning at 6:30 p.m.
at the National Orange Show. There will be a formal awards presentation at
that time for Best of Show and First, Second and Third place winners. This is
a celebratory occasion where all students, teachers, family and friends of
the artists are encouraged to attend. Awards for student winners not in
attendance will be given to their teachers.
8. Visual Art Teachers will remove student artwork the morning of Monday,
May 7, 2018. Any student work not removed by the teacher will be taken to
the PDC Building (Sun Building), VAPA Office, to be picked up by the
teacher. The VAPA Office hours are 8:00-4:30pm, Monday – Friday.
