The battle of Stalingrad “was [a]
protracted and bloody urban
warfare fought from street to
street…as the Red Army resisted
German attempts to take the city.”
The importance of this battle was
that Germany was being kept from
taking any more territory during this
time. It was also one of the first
major losses for the German army.
It was the successful Soviet
defense of the city of Stalingrad. It
stopped German advance into the
Soviet Union. “... marked the
turning point of the tide of war in
favor of the Allies.”
The attack of Pearl Harbor took place on December 6,
1941. It was a surprise military strike by the Imperial
Japanese Navy air service against the US Naval Base.
This attack had a big impact on the U.S. This caused
the entrance of the U.S. into WWII. And the Japanese
had failed to “cripple the Pacific Fleet.” The U.S. navy
was able to rebound quickly from the attack.
VE-Day was significant to
WWII because it’s
celebrating the victory in
Europe. The impact of of
VE-Day on WWII led to
celebration in the U.S. and
throughout Europe. “Finally,
Karl Donitz who has taken
over as Germany’s leader
following Hitler’s death,
agreed to a surrender in
May [1945]...” There was
also a radio broadcast
salute from Stalin saying
how courage has defeated
Nazi’s and the war is over.
The Battle of Midway “was a catastrophic defeat
from which the Imperial Japanese Navy never
fully recovered.” This battle was following the
attack on Pearl Harbor. This battle is important
because it was the turning point in the was in the
pacific. It was a four day battle between aircraft.
The U.S. destroyed hundreds of Japanese
planes and regained control of the pacific once
again. But the Japanese still fought even after
the war had ended in Europe.
VJ-Day is a significant day in
WWII because it’s when there was
victory over Japan. This day is
celebrating when it was
announced that Japan had
surrendered unconditionally to the
Allies. The impact was Japan had
effectively ended WWII when they
surrendered in August 1945 and
this day is celebrated September
2nd.
Winston Churchill was significant figure to
World War II because he was a former
Prime MInister, and he rallied the nation
in defiance of Adolf Hitler. Churchill was
apart of the “Big Three” along with Russia
and the United States. “His unbounded
energy and determination meant that he
was not always easy to work with. But, as
Field Marshal Sir Alan Brooke wrote, 'It is
worth all these difficulties to have the
privilege to work with such a man'.” In
World War II Churchill was victorious and
this had a big impact on Europe and
Japan because they had lost, but they
tried for reconstruction.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was the only American
president in history to be elected four times,
Roosevelt was a significant figure to World
War II because he was the one to make the
decision of having the U.S. enter the war. He
also was apart of the Big Three. Roosevelt
and Churchill worked together to find ways to
defeat Nazi Germany and Hitler. “He steadily
promoted the invasion of the European
continent to liberate it from Hitler’s Germany
that finally began on D-Day.”
