TUTORIAL: UNIFORM FLOW

1. A rectangular irrigation channel of base width 1m, is to convey 0.2m3/s discharge at a

depth of 0.5m under uniform flow conditions. The slope of the channel is 0.0004.

a) Find the channel roughness n. (Ans: 0.0198)

b) At the end of a dry period, it has been observed that there is a change in the roughness
of the base, such that the same discharge, 0.2m3 /s, could be conveyed at a depth of
0.8m, under uniform flow conditions. Calculate the base roughness. (Note that side
wall roughness do not change). (Ans: 0.036)

2. For a rectangular open channel the following information is given: Discharge,

Q=125m3/s, cross-section width, b = 10m, Manning roughness coefficient n = 0.025,
channel bottom slope So = 0.00015. Determine uniform flow depth, yn. (For the first
iteration assume yn = 10 m)

3. Figure below shows the section of a channel with flood way. Manning coefficient is
taken as 0.025 for the main channel and 0.035 for the flood way. Knowing that the
bed slope is 10 cm/km, calculate the discharge. (Ans: 43.87m3/s).
4. A trapezoidal concrete lined channel was designed to convey the maximum flow rate
of 75m3/s with bottom slope of 1:2000. The side slope is 45° and manning coefficient
n = 0.014. Propose the bottom width and flow depth of the channel to get the
maximum efficiency.
(Ans: b = 3.33m, y = 4.02m)
